Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said that the government is reviewing laws governing firearm licensing for civilians following the deadly attack at Sydney’s Bondi Beach. He stated that proposals to further tighten gun ownership laws are under consideration, along with a reassessment of how many firearms a single individual should be licensed to possess.
The Prime Minis ter emphasized that public safety remains the government’s top priority, noting that the recent incident has underscored the urgent need to strengthen and modernize firearms regulations.
On Sunday, two assailants opened fire at Bondi Beach, one of Australia’s most popular coastal landmarks, targeting a Jewish annual gathering. The attack claimed the lives of 15 people, sending shockwaves of grief and outrage across the country.
Meanwhile, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said that the attacker’s father had arrived in Australia on a student visa, while his son, Sajid Akram, was born in the country. The minister also confirmed that one of the Bondi Beach attackers, Naveed Akram, had come to the attention of Australian security intelligence agencies in October 2019.
Authorities said a full investigation into the incident is underway, with assurances that those responsible will face the full force of the law. The government is also reviewing national security and public safety policies in light of the tragedy
