20 جنوری اردو ادب کے تقویمِ دل میں ایک ایسی تاریخ ہے جس پر ٹھہر کر آنکھ بھیگتی ہے اور قلم لرزتا ہے۔ اسی دن تمل ناڈو کے نامور شاعر، ادیب اور ہمہ جہت دانشور مختار بدری اس دنیا سے رخصت ہوئے—مگر حقیقت یہ ہے کہ وہ کہیں گئے نہیں؛ وہ لفظوں میں، لغتوں میں، تراجم میں، اور ان دلوں میں زندہ ہیں جنہیں انہوں نے اردو سے آشنا کیا، اور ان ذہنوں میں بھی جنہیں انہوں نے تمل ادب کی خوشبو اردو میں سونپی۔

مختار بدریؔ محض شاعر یا ادیب نہیں تھے؛ وہ ناظمِ مشاعرہ تھے تو محقق بھی، تاریخ دان تھے تو لغت نویس بھی، نقاد تھے تو مترجم بھی۔ ان کی شخصیت میں علم کے کئی چراغ روشن تھے اور ہر چراغ اپنی روشنی الگ زاویے سے بکھیرتا تھا۔ انہوں نے اردو ادب کے قیمتی سرمایے کو تمل دنیا تک پہنچایا—خواجہ احمد عباس، کرشن چندر، عصمت چغتائی اور مہندر سنگھ بیدی کے افسانوی مجموعے تمل زبان میں منتقل کیے، تاکہ زبان کی دیواریں گر جائیں اور انسان کا دکھ، محبت اور جدوجہد ایک دوسرے تک بے رکاوٹ پہنچے۔

اسی طرح تمل ادب کی عظیم روایت کو انہوں نے اردو کے قالب میں ڈھالا۔ تمل کی شہرۂ آفاق تصنیف تروکرل کا اردو ترجمہ ان کی علمی بصیرت کا روشن حوالہ ہے—ایک ایسا کارنامہ جو مقبول بھی ہوا اور معتبر بھی۔ زبانوں کے درمیان یہ پل بنانا آسان نہیں ہوتا؛ اس کے لیے صرف علم نہیں، ذوق اور امانت بھی درکار ہوتی ہے—اور مختار بدریؔ اس امانت کے پورے حق دار تھے۔

علمی دنیا میں ان کا ایک اور بے مثال کارنامہ “اسلام الف سے ی تک” ہے—ایک جامع اسلامی انسائیکلوپیڈیا، جس میں قرآنی الفاظ کے معانی، حوالہ جات اور عددی اشارات نہایت محنت اور تحقیق کے ساتھ جمع کیے گئے۔ اسی طرح ان کی ضخیم اردو لغت “الفاظ و معانی”، اور اس سے قبل شائع ہونے والی تمل–اردو اور اردو–تمل لغات، ان کی لغوی خدمت کی زندہ مثالیں ہیں۔ علمُ الاعداد پر ان کا رسالہ ہو یا “تمل ناڈو میں مسلمان” جیسی وقیع تصنیف—ہر جگہ ان کی نظر کی گہرائی اور محققانہ دیانت جھلکتی ہے۔ اس کتاب میں تمل ناڈو میں مسلمانوں کی آمد، مدارس و تعلیمی اداروں کی تاریخ، اولیائے کرام کے مزارات، اہم شخصیات، شعرا و ادبا—سب ایک ہمہ گیر بیانیے میں سمٹ آئے ہیں۔

ادب کے میدان میں وہ خود بھی کہنہ مشق افسانہ نگار اور فلسفیانہ رنگ کے حامل شاعر تھے۔ ان کی شاعری میں فکر کی دھیمی آنچ تھی—نہ شور، نہ نمائش؛ بس سچ کی حرارت۔ وہ مشاعروں میں اپنی شرکت بلا معاوضہ رکھتے، کئی مشاعرے اپنی جیب سے کراتے، نئے لکھنے والوں کی حوصلہ افزائی کرتے، اور اہلِ قلم کی عزت افزائی کو اپنا فرض سمجھتے۔ نرم دل، سخی، خوددار—کسی کا احسان لینا گوارا نہ کرتے، مگر ضرورت مند رشتہ داروں اور دوستوں کی مدد اس طرح کرتے کہ کسی کی خودی مجروح نہ ہو۔

ان کی ذاتی زندگی بھی سادگی اور وقار کی آئینہ دار تھی۔ بچپن میں والد کا سایہ اٹھ گیا؛ والدہ نے محبت اور محنت سے پرورش کی۔ ماں سے ان کی وابستگی ایسی تھی کہ ان کے انتقال کے بعد وہ اندر سے ٹوٹ گئے۔ اسی یاد میں اپنے آبائی شہر کرشنگری میں ایک خوبصورت مسجد تعمیر کرائی—گویا محبت کو اینٹ اور دعا کو چھت بنا دیا۔ اس کے بعد وہ زیادہ عرصہ نہ جی سکے؛ 20 جنوری کو راہیِ ملکِ عدم ہوئے۔

ممبئی میں قیام کے دوران وہ ادبی دنیا کے بڑے ناموں سے وابستہ رہے—خواجہ احمد عباس کے ساتھ کام کیا، ساحر لدھیانوی، کرشن چندر اور دیگر اہلِ قلم سے قریبی روابط رہے۔ مگر شہرت کے ہنگاموں سے وہ ہمیشہ ایک باوقار فاصلے پر رہے—خوش پوشاک، نفیس طبع، اور خاموش وقار کے حامل۔

مختار بدریؔ کا اصل تعارف ان کی کتابوں کی فہرست نہیں، بلکہ وہ روایت ہے جو انہوں نے قائم کی: زبانوں کے درمیان احترام، ادب میں انسان دوستی، علم میں دیانت، اور معاشرت میں کرم۔ وہ چلے گئے، مگر اردو اور تمل کے بیچ جو چراغ انہوں نے جلایا، وہ بجھنے والا نہیں۔
یہی کسی بڑے انسان کی پہچان ہے—کہ اس کے بعد بھی روشنی باقی رہے۔

Mukhtar Badri — An Era, a Tradition, a Living Light

The 20th of January stands in the emotional calendar of Urdu literature as a day of pause and remembrance. It is the day when Tamil Nadu’s eminent poet, writer, and multi-dimensional scholar Mukhtar Badri departed from this world. Yet, in truth, he did not leave—he merely transformed into memory, into words, into dictionaries and translations, and into the hearts of those whom he introduced to Urdu, and those to whom he carried the fragrance of Tamil literature in the language of Urdu.

Mukhtar Badri was not merely a poet or a prose writer. He was a master compère of mushairas, a historian, lexicographer, researcher, critic, and an accomplished translator. His personality was a constellation of knowledge, each star shining with a distinct brilliance. He rendered invaluable services by introducing Urdu literature to the Tamil world, translating works of eminent writers such as Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, Krishan Chander, Ismat Chughtai, and Mahendra Singh Bedi—thereby dismantling linguistic barriers and allowing human emotions, struggles, and compassion to flow freely across cultures.

In the same spirit, he carried Tamil literature into the world of Urdu. His Urdu translation of the celebrated Tamil classic Tirukkural stands as a landmark achievement—widely appreciated for both its literary elegance and scholarly integrity. Building such bridges between languages requires more than linguistic command; it demands sensitivity, honesty, and deep cultural understanding—qualities Mukhtar Badri possessed in abundance.

Among his most remarkable scholarly contributions is “Islam from Alif to Ya”, a comprehensive Islamic encyclopedia unique in its scope. It meticulously documents Qur’anic terms along with their meanings, references, and numerical occurrences. Equally significant is his monumental Urdu dictionary “Alfaz-o-Ma‘ani”, preceded by the publication of Tamil-Urdu and Urdu-Tamil dictionaries—lasting testaments to his devotion to linguistic harmony. His writings on numerology and his extensive work “Muslims in Tamil Nadu” further reveal the depth of his scholarship. The latter is an encyclopedic record encompassing the arrival of Muslims in Tamil Nadu, the history of madrasas, schools and colleges, Sufi shrines, notable personalities, poets, and writers—woven into a single, cohesive historical narrative.

Mukhtar Badri was himself a refined short-story writer and a seasoned poet, whose verses bore a philosophical undertone—quiet, contemplative, and free from pretension. He took it upon himself to honour poets and writers, to encourage emerging voices, and to serve literature with humility. He often organized mushairas at his own expense and participated in them without remuneration. His generosity was as discreet as it was sincere.

Soft-hearted yet dignified, self-respecting to the core, he never accepted favours. Yet he supported impoverished relatives and friends in a manner so graceful that no one’s dignity was ever compromised. Impeccably dressed, aesthetically refined, and noble in temperament, he embodied elegance in both appearance and conduct.

He lost his father in childhood and was raised with exceptional care and affection by his mother, to whom he remained deeply devoted throughout his life. Her passing left him emotionally shattered. In her memory, he built a beautiful mosque in his ancestral town of Krishnagiri—a gesture that transformed grief into devotion. Not long after, his own journey neared its end.

Though he maintained a dignified distance from worldly acclaim, he spent significant years in Mumbai, working closely with Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, and sharing warm relationships with literary luminaries such as Sahir Ludhianvi and Krishan Chander. Fame never altered his humility; grace remained his constant companion.

Mukhtar Badri’s true legacy does not lie merely in the long list of his publications, but in the values he upheld: respect between languages, humanism in literature, integrity in scholarship, and compassion in social life. He may have departed from the physical world, but the lamp he lit between Urdu and Tamil continues to glow—undimmed and enduring.

That, indeed, is the mark of a great soul:
after they are gone, the light remains.
