English Edition | October 23, 2026
Trump’s political influence, global conflicts, economic uncertainty, artificial intelligence and climate change remain central to the forces reshaping the world.
In November 2025, the British weekly magazine The Economist published its annual special edition, The World Ahead 2026, examining the forces likely to shape international affairs during the following year. In his introductory assessment, editor Tom Standage identified ten major themes, ranging from Donald Trump’s influence on global politics to the future of artificial intelligence, the climate crisis, international sport and weight-loss medicines.
With the year approaching its final months, the predictions provide a useful framework for assessing what has happened, what remains uncertain and which concerns have received support from emerging evidence.
The Economist anticipated sharply contrasting interpretations of American history and national identity as the United States marked the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. It also identified the November midterm elections as a crucial test of the political direction of the Trump administration.
Assessment: Political divisions and disagreements over the administration’s policies remain central to American public life. However, as of October 23, the midterm elections have not taken place. Their outcome—and the extent to which voters endorse or reject the administration’s direction—cannot yet be determined.
The magazine questioned whether the world was entering a new Cold War between American- and Chinese-led blocs or moving towards an informal division into American, Russian and Chinese spheres of influence. It anticipated that the existing rules-based international order could weaken further.
Assessment: Rising European defence expenditure and persistent strategic competition support the broader concern that governments are increasingly prioritising security and national interests. EU defence expenditure is estimated to reach €454 billion in 2026, approximately 75.3% above its 2021 level.
These developments are consistent with a more uncertain international order, although they do not establish that the world has settled into any single geopolitical arrangement.
The Economist expected the fragile peace in Gaza to remain vulnerable while conflicts in Ukraine, Sudan and Myanmar continued. It also warned that strategic competition could intensify in cyberspace, the Arctic, outer space and maritime regions.
Assessment: Available conflict-monitoring data for October 2026 continue to record violence and instability in Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan and Myanmar. This lends substantial support to the prediction that international conflicts would persist.
Nevertheless, the continuation of a conflict does not prove every prediction about its intensity, duration or eventual outcome. The durability of any peace arrangement must be assessed separately.
The magazine predicted that European governments would struggle to increase defence spending, stimulate economic growth, manage public deficits and respond to the growing appeal of hard-right political parties.
Assessment: The increase in European defence expenditure provides clear evidence that security has become a higher policy priority. The challenge is to strengthen military capabilities without undermining economic stability or other public priorities. The European Central Bank has noted that additional defence investment could support economic growth, although the actual benefits will depend on how the money is spent.
The prediction has therefore gained support, but the longer-term economic and political consequences remain uncertain.
The Economist argued that an “America First” approach could create opportunities for China to expand its diplomatic and economic influence, particularly among developing countries across Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Assessment: The argument offers a plausible strategic scenario, but it requires more than evidence of tensions between Washington and Beijing to be considered fully vindicated. A stronger assessment would require comparable data on Chinese trade agreements, investment, diplomatic influence and economic relationships with developing countries.
The opportunity identified by the magazine should therefore be regarded as a continuing strategic possibility rather than a conclusively established outcome.
The magazine warned that American tariffs could weaken global economic growth and that mounting public debt in wealthy countries could increase the risk of a bond-market crisis. It also highlighted the approaching change in leadership at the Federal Reserve.
Assessment: Recent American fiscal figures strengthen the concern about public debt. Reuters reported in October that the US federal budget deficit had reached nearly $2 trillion for fiscal year 2026, while the national debt exceeded $40 trillion and interest payments reached a record level.
Another prediction has been fulfilled: Kevin Warsh succeeded Jerome Powell as chair of the Federal Reserve on May 22, 2026.
The leadership transition has occurred, and fiscal vulnerabilities are evident. However, a growing risk of financial instability should not be confused with proof that a major bond-market crisis has already taken place.
The Economist questioned whether enormous investment in AI infrastructure was concealing weaknesses in the American economy. It also warned that artificial intelligence could increasingly affect employment opportunities, particularly for recent university graduates.
Assessment: Emerging research provides meaningful evidence for the employment concern. A September 2026 study by the US Census Bureau found that graduates in the most AI-exposed fields experienced weaker initial employment outcomes and lower earnings. Research from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas has also identified reduced demand for some jobs involving tasks that generative AI can perform more efficiently.
This supports the prediction that AI is affecting parts of the graduate labour market. It does not, however, establish that the AI investment bubble has burst. The labour-market effects are measurable, while the possibility of a wider financial crash remains unresolved.
The magazine argued that limiting global warming to 1.5°C had become increasingly difficult, even as renewable energy and other clean technologies expanded. It also highlighted geothermal energy as an area worth watching.
Assessment: The International Energy Agency reported that global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions rose by approximately 0.4% in 2025, the slowest annual increase since 2021. Yet total emissions still reached a record of about 38.4 billion tonnes. China recorded a decline in emissions, while India’s energy-related emissions remained broadly flat, with renewable energy expansion contributing to the wider picture.
The slowdown supports the view that the energy transition is changing the trajectory of emissions. But the claim that global emissions have peaked remains unproven. Cleaner technologies are advancing without yet delivering the worldwide emissions reductions required to resolve the climate crisis.
The Economist anticipated that the 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, would bring sport and international politics into closer contact. It also highlighted controversy surrounding the proposed Enhanced Games, where performance-enhancing drugs were to be permitted under the event’s rules.
Assessment: The World Cup concluded on July 19, 2026. According to FIFA, Spain defeated Argentina 1–0 after extra time to win the tournament, which attracted more than 6.8 million spectators.
The prediction that the tournament would become a major international sporting event was fulfilled. However, the concern that strained relations among the host countries might discourage fans was not borne out by the overall attendance figures.
The Enhanced Games require a separate assessment based on their actual organisation, rules and outcomes; the World Cup’s success cannot settle that question.
The magazine predicted that GLP-1 weight-loss medicines would become more effective, less expensive and increasingly available in pill form. It also raised questions about the ethics of using pharmaceutical interventions to change physical performance and appearance.
Assessment: This prediction concerns medical approvals, commercial prices and practical access, rather than scientific research alone. Establishing whether it has been fulfilled requires current evidence about approved oral treatments, their costs and their availability to patients.
The development of a new medicine does not automatically mean that it is affordable or widely accessible. Consequently, this prediction should not be declared fully correct without evidence supporting each of those claims.
Prediction Assessment as of October 23, 2026 US political division Ongoing; midterm verdict pending Geopolitical fragmentation Broadly supported Continuing global conflicts Substantially supported Higher European defence spending Clearly supported China gaining new opportunities Plausible, but not fully established Economic and debt-related risks Supported; a major bond-market crisis is not established AI’s effects on graduate employment Supported by emerging research Climate and emissions outlook Mixed; emissions remain at record levels World Cup and political tensions Tournament completed; attendance remained strong Better and cheaper weight-loss medicines Requires further verification
The strongest feature of The World Ahead 2026 is its recognition that geopolitics, economics, technology and climate change are interconnected. Rising defence expenditure places pressure on public budgets. Trade tensions affect economic growth. Artificial intelligence creates new opportunities while threatening some entry-level jobs. Meanwhile, clean-energy investment is expanding, but global carbon emissions have not yet begun the sustained decline needed to address climate change.
The record is therefore mixed but instructive. Several of the magazine’s central concerns have received substantial support from events and data. Others remain scenarios rather than established outcomes, while some predictions cannot yet be judged conclusively.
For journalists, policymakers and readers alike, the lesson is clear: a credible forecast should not be treated as a statement of certainty. Its value lies in identifying meaningful risks, explaining the evidence and remaining willing to revise conclusions as events unfold.
Editorial note: This assessment reflects information available as of October 23, 2026. Forecasts, partial confirmations and verified outcomes have been distinguished wherever possible.
