کولکاتا کی جادھوپور یونیورسٹی کے گیٹ نمبر 4 پر جب زعفرانی پرچم اٹھائے ہوئے نوجوان چڑھے اور یونیورسٹی کے پھول نما نشان کو اپنے قدم جمانے کے لیے استعمال کیا، اسی لمحے اس دعوے کا پردہ بھی چاک ہوگیا کہ جمعرات، 20 اگست کی یہ مہم محض ایک پُرامن طلبہ احتجاج تھی۔

یہ نشان کسی معمولی علامت کا نام نہیں۔ معروف مصور نندلال بوس کے تخلیق کردہ اس نشان میں تین شعلے ایک کھلے ہوئے کنول کے حصار میں دکھائی دیتے ہیں۔ دو دہائیوں سے زیادہ عرصے تک یہ نشان یونیورسٹی کے دروازے پر علم، فن اور انسانی تخیل کی ایک خاموش گواہی بن کر کھڑا رہا۔ مگر اسی نشان کو اُن قدموں نے روند ڈالا جو ہاتھوں میں زعفرانی پرچم لیے خود کو قوم پرستی کا محافظ سمجھتے ہیں۔

نشان کے تین شعلے ہمہ جہت نشوونما، جذبات و تخیل اور روحانی زندگی کی علامت ہیں، جبکہ کنول کی پتیاں فنونِ لطیفہ کی نمائندگی کرتی ہیں۔ نندلال بوس بنگال کے عظیم فنّی احیا کی تحریک کے نمایاں ستون تھے اور شانتی نکیتن کے کلا بھون کے سابق سربراہ بھی۔ یونیورسٹی نے اپنی گولڈن جوبلی کے موقع پر ’’جاننے کے ذریعے ترقی‘‘ کو اپنا نصب العین بنایا تھا، اور بوس کا تخلیق کردہ نشان اسی فلسفے کی بصری ترجمانی تھا۔

لیکن المیہ دیکھیے!

جو لوگ اپنی شامیں دوسروں کو ’’غدارِ وطن‘‘ ثابت کرنے میں گزارتے ہیں، انہی کے قدموں تلے علم و فن کی علامت کچل دی گئی۔ جو قوم پرستی کے نام پر دوسروں کو سبق پڑھاتے ہیں، انہوں نے اپنے ہی ہاتھوں ایک ایسے نشان کی بے حرمتی کردی جو علم، تخیل، فن اور روحانی زندگی کا پیغام دیتا تھا۔

یہ منظر اپنے اندر ایک ایسی تلخ ستم ظریفی لیے ہوئے تھا جسے شاید تاریخ بھی آسانی سے فراموش نہ کرسکے۔

کنول بھی محفوظ نہ رہا اُن قدموں سے جو کنول کی سیاست کے پرچم تلے مارچ کرتے ہیں۔

اور اس واقعے کا سب سے تشویش ناک پہلو صرف نشان کا ٹوٹنا نہیں۔ یہ تو ایک طویل رات کے بعد سامنے آنے والا منظر تھا؛ ایک ایسی رات جس میں آتش زنی، حملے اور خوف و ہراس کے واقعات رونما ہوئے، جبکہ یونیورسٹی انتظامیہ اور پولیس اب تک ان واقعات کی مکمل اور قابلِ اطمینان وضاحت پیش نہیں کرسکے۔

یونیورسٹی کا نشان ٹوٹا ہے، مگر سوال اس سے کہیں بڑا ہے۔

اگر علم کے دروازے پر نصب فن کی علامت بھی سیاسی جنون کے قدموں سے محفوظ نہیں، تو پھر اس ملک میں اختلافِ رائے، تعلیم، تخیل اور جمہوری آزادی کی حفاظت کون کرے گا؟

یہ صرف ایک نشان کی شکستگی نہیں؛ یہ اُس تہذیب کے چہرے پر پڑنے والی ایک خراش ہے جو علم کو طاقت سے، فن کو نفرت سے اور اختلاف کو غداری سے بلند سمجھتی تھی۔

Jadavpur University: When the Lotus of Art Was Trampled by the Feet of Saffron Politics

When saffron-flag-bearing men climbed Gate 4 of Jadavpur University in Kolkata and used the university’s lotus-ringed emblem as a foothold, the last pretence that Thursday’s, August 20, mobilisation was merely a peaceful student protest collapsed beneath their feet.

The emblem was no ordinary symbol. Designed by the celebrated artist Nandalal Bose, it depicts three flames encircled by a blooming lotus. For more than two decades, it had stood above the university gate as a quiet testament to knowledge, art and human imagination. Yet that very symbol was broken and trampled by men carrying saffron flags and claiming the mantle of nationalism.

The three flames represent all-round development, emotion and imagination, and spiritual life. The petals of the lotus represent the arts. Bose was one of the towering figures of the Bengal School of Art and a former principal of Kala Bhavana at Santiniketan. At its golden jubilee, Jadavpur University adopted the motto “Development Through Knowing”—and Bose’s emblem was created to embody that very philosophy.

But the irony is devastating.

Men who spend their evenings branding others as “anti-national” broke a symbol of knowledge and art with their own feet. Those who claim to be guardians of nationalism trampled upon an emblem that spoke not of hatred, but of learning, imagination, creativity and the spiritual life of humanity.

There was something almost unbearably grim in the spectacle.

Even a lotus was not safe from the foot soldiers of lotus politics.

And the broken emblem was only one fragment of a much darker episode. It came in broad daylight, after a night marked by arson, assault and intimidation—events for which neither the university administration nor the police have yet provided a full and convincing account.

The real question, therefore, is larger than the damage done to a university emblem.

If even a work of art installed at the gates of an institution of learning cannot be protected from political rage, who will protect education from power, imagination from ideology, and dissent from the accusation of treason?

The emblem may have been broken.

But what has been wounded is something far greater—the idea of a civilisation in which knowledge rises above power, art rises above hatred, and disagreement is never mistaken for disloyalty.
