امریکی محکمۂ انصاف کی جاری کردہ تصاویر سے مرکزی وزیر کے سابقہ بیان پر سوالات؛ اپوزیشن نے شفافیت اور وضاحت کا مطالبہ کیا

نئی دہلی، 22 اکتوبر 2026ء: امریکی محکمۂ انصاف کی جانب سے جاری کردہ دستاویزات میں مرکزی وزیر برائے پٹرولیم و قدرتی گیس ہردیپ سنگھ پوری اور سزا یافتہ جنسی مجرم جیفری ایپسٹین کی متعدد تصاویر منظرِ عام پر آنے کے بعد بھارتی سیاسی حلقوں میں ایک نئی بحث چھڑ گئی ہے۔ ان تصاویر میں دونوں افراد ایک میز کے آمنے سامنے بیٹھے دکھائی دیتے ہیں، جب کہ تصویر کے دائرے میں کوئی تیسرا شخص نظر نہیں آتا۔ اس انکشاف نے پوری کے فروری میں دیے گئے اس بیان پر سوالات اٹھا دیے ہیں کہ ایپسٹین سے ان کی ملاقاتیں بین الاقوامی امن ادارے کے وفد کے حصے کے طور پر ہوئی تھیں۔

دی وائر اور دی نیوز منٹ کی رپورٹوں کے مطابق، امریکی محکمۂ انصاف کی جانب سے جنوری 2026ء میں جاری کردہ دستاویزات کے نویں مجموعے میں اس ملاقات کی کم از کم دس تقریباً یکساں تصاویر موجود ہیں، جن میں زاویوں کا معمولی فرق ہے۔ ان تصاویر کے منظرِ عام پر آنے کے بعد اپوزیشن جماعتوں نے مرکزی وزیر سے وضاحت طلب کی ہے۔

پوری نے فروری میں ایک پریس کانفرنس کے دوران کہا تھا کہ انہوں نے 2009ء سے 2017ء کے درمیان ایپسٹین سے تین یا زیادہ سے زیادہ چار مرتبہ ملاقات کی۔ ان کے مطابق، ایپسٹین سے پہلی ملاقات اس وقت ہوئی جب وہ بین الاقوامی امن ادارے سے وابستہ تھے اور ان کے اس وقت کے سربراہ، ناروے کے سفارت کار تیریے رود لارسن، ایپسٹین سے واقف تھے۔ پوری کا کہنا تھا کہ یہ ملاقاتیں ادارے کے وفد کے تناظر میں ہوئی تھیں۔

تازہ تصاویر کے بارے میں پوری کے دفتر نے دی وائر کو بتایا کہ وزیر کو تقریباً ایک دہائی پرانی ان تصاویر میں دکھائی گئی مخصوص ملاقات یاد نہیں، اور وہ یہ بھی نہیں بتا سکتے کہ تصویر کھینچے جانے سے پہلے یا بعد میں وہاں دوسرے افراد موجود تھے یا نہیں۔ دفتر نے یہ وضاحت بھی کی کہ پوری نے کبھی یہ دعویٰ نہیں کیا تھا کہ ان کی ایپسٹین سے کبھی تنہائی میں ملاقات نہیں ہوئی۔ اس کے مطابق، تصاویر میں میز، کاغذات اور پیشہ ورانہ ماحول دکھائی دیتا ہے، جو کام سے متعلق ملاقاتوں کے مؤقف کی تائید کرتا ہے۔ دفتر نے یہ بھی کہا کہ پوری کبھی ایپسٹین کے جزیرے پر نہیں گئے اور ان کے رابطوں کا مقصد بھارتی معیشت اور ڈیجیٹل شعبے میں سرمایہ کاری کے امکانات کو نمایاں کرنا تھا۔

امریکی دستاویزات میں 2014ء سے 2017ء کے درمیان پوری اور ایپسٹین کے درمیان متعدد ای میلز کا بھی ذکر ہے۔ ان مراسلات کے مطابق، دونوں کی کم از کم تین ملاقاتیں نیویارک میں ایپسٹین کی رہائش گاہ پر طے ہوئیں۔ ستمبر 2014ء میں ایپسٹین نے پوری کا تعارف لنکڈ اِن کے شریک بانی ریڈ ہوفمین سے کرایا۔ بعد ازاں پوری نے بھارت کے انٹرنیٹ اور ڈیجیٹل شعبے میں سرمایہ کاری کے امکانات پر ای میل بھیجی۔ اکتوبر 2014ء میں ایپسٹین کے معاون کے لیے بھارتی ویزے کی درخواست سے متعلق مراسلت بھی سامنے آئی۔ اسی سال دسمبر میں پوری نے ایپسٹین کے جزیرے کو ’’غیر معمولی جزیرہ‘‘ قرار دیتے ہوئے اس کی واپسی کے بعد گفتگو کی خواہش ظاہر کی تھی۔ تاہم، یہ مراسلتیں بذاتِ خود کسی مجرمانہ سرگرمی میں پوری کی شمولیت کا ثبوت نہیں ہیں۔

کانگریس رہنما راہل گاندھی نے تصاویر کے منظرِ عام پر آنے کے وقت اور امریکی وزیر خارجہ مارکو روبیو کے بھارت کے دورے کے تناظر میں سیاسی دباؤ اور بلیک میلنگ کا سوال اٹھایا۔ کانگریس، ترنمول کانگریس، شیو سینا اور نیشنلسٹ کانگریس پارٹی (شردچندر پوار گروپ) کے رہنماؤں نے بھی مختلف انداز میں معاملے کی شفاف وضاحت کا مطالبہ کیا۔ ترنمول کانگریس کی رکنِ پارلیمان مہوا موئترا نے سوال کیا کہ اگر ملاقاتیں وفد کے ساتھ ہوئی تھیں تو تصاویر میں دوسرے ارکان کہاں ہیں؟ این سی پی (شردچندر پوار) کے رہنما انیش گوانڈے نے ملاقاتوں کی نوعیت اور ان میں ہونے والی گفتگو کی تفصیلات عام کرنے پر زور دیا۔

ایپسٹین کو 2008ء میں نابالغ سے متعلق جنسی جرم کے معاملے میں سزا ہوئی تھی۔ جولائی 2019ء میں اسے وفاقی سطح پر جنسی اسمگلنگ کے الزامات کے تحت دوبارہ گرفتار کیا گیا، لیکن مقدمے کی سماعت سے پہلے ہی وہ حراست میں مردہ پایا گیا؛ حکام نے اس کی موت کو خودکشی قرار دیا تھا۔

اس پورے معاملے میں بنیادی سوال یہ ہے کہ ان ملاقاتوں کی نوعیت کیا تھی اور ان کے بارے میں دیے گئے بیانات کی کتنی وضاحت سامنے آتی ہے۔ کسی متنازع یا بدنام شخص سے ملاقات بذاتِ خود کسی جرم میں ملوث ہونے کا ثبوت نہیں، لیکن عوامی عہدے پر فائز شخص سے یہ توقع ضرور کی جاتی ہے کہ وہ اپنے روابط اور متعلقہ مراسلت کے بارے میں شفاف جواب دے۔ اب نگاہیں ہردیپ سنگھ پوری اور مرکزی حکومت کے آئندہ مؤقف پر مرکوز ہیں۔

US Justice Department records raise questions about the Union minister’s earlier account; opposition demands transparency and clarification

New Delhi, October 22, 2026: The emergence of photographs showing Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri seated across a table from convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has triggered a fresh political controversy in India. The images, released as part of documents published by the US Department of Justice, show the two men apparently alone within the frame, prompting questions about Puri’s earlier account that his interactions with Epstein took place as part of a delegation.

Reports by The Wire and The News Minute state that at least ten nearly identical photographs, taken from slightly different angles, appear in Dataset 9 of the Justice Department’s records released in January 2026. Their circulation has renewed scrutiny of Puri’s explanation at a press conference in February.

Puri had said that he met Epstein three or, at most, four times between 2009 and 2017. According to his account, their first meeting took place after he joined the International Peace Institute (IPI), where his then-boss, Norwegian diplomat Terje Rød-Larsen, was acquainted with Epstein. Puri described the encounters as meetings connected with an IPI delegation.

Responding to The Wire, Puri’s office said the minister could not recall which meeting the photographs depicted, given that nearly a decade had passed, or whether other people were present before or after the photographs were taken. It also clarified that Puri had never claimed that he had not met Epstein alone. The office maintained that the photographs showed a professional setting, with papers and a table between the two men, and were consistent with its account of work-related interactions. It reiterated that Puri had never visited Epstein’s island and said their exchanges concerned promoting investment opportunities in India’s economy and digital sector.

The records also contain email correspondence between Puri and Epstein spanning 2014 to 2017. According to the reports, at least three meetings were scheduled at Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse. In September 2014, Epstein introduced Puri to LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman. Puri subsequently sent an email outlining investment opportunities in India’s internet economy and the potential of the country’s digital initiatives. Other correspondence included a request concerning an Indian visa for Epstein’s assistant. In December 2014, Puri referred to Epstein’s island as an “exotic island” and expressed an interest in meeting him after his return. These communications, however, do not by themselves establish Puri’s involvement in any criminal activity.

Opposition leaders have demanded answers. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi questioned the timing of the photographs’ circulation in the context of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to India, raising allegations of political pressure and blackmail. Leaders from the Congress, Trinamool Congress, Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar faction) also called for greater transparency. Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra questioned the absence of other delegates in the photographs, while NCP-SP leader Anish Gawande urged Puri to clarify the nature of the meetings and make the substance of the discussions public.

Epstein was convicted in Florida in 2008 in a case involving the solicitation of a minor. He was arrested again in July 2019 on federal sex-trafficking charges and died in custody the following month while awaiting trial. His death was officially ruled a suicide.

The controversy centres on the nature of Puri’s interactions with Epstein and the questions raised by the newly circulated photographs. Meeting a disgraced individual does not, in itself, establish wrongdoing. Nevertheless, public officials are expected to provide clear and transparent explanations of their professional associations and relevant correspondence. The political debate is now likely to intensify as attention turns to Puri’s further response and the Union government’s position.
