Dispute over Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls deepens as opposition parties reportedly boycott meeting
Alif News | National Affairs
The political confrontation over Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is intensifying, with several opposition parties demanding greater accountability from the Election Commission of India.
According to reports, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Left parties boycotted a meeting and decided to press ahead with their demand for Kumar’s resignation.
At the centre of the controversy is the SIR exercise, which opposition parties fear could result in the deletion of eligible voters’ names from electoral rolls. They have called for a transparent and fair verification process, insisting that legitimate voters must not be deprived of their constitutional right to vote.
The parties have also urged the Election Commission to address their concerns and provide clarity on the procedures being followed during the revision of electoral rolls. They maintain that efforts to improve the accuracy of voter lists must not inadvertently exclude eligible citizens.
The dispute raises broader questions about electoral transparency, institutional accountability and the protection of voting rights in a democracy. However, concerns about the possible deletion of eligible voters must be assessed in the light of verifiable evidence and the Election Commission’s response.
Alif News Perspective: The credibility of a democratic election depends not only on accurate electoral rolls but also on public confidence in the process. Every eligible citizen’s right to vote must be protected, and the revision of voter lists should be conducted transparently, fairly and with adequate safeguards against wrongful exclusion.
