ہردیپ سنگھ پوری کی تصاویر، مارکو روبیو کا دورۂ بھارت اور ٹرمپ کے تجارتی معاہدے سے متعلق بیان کئی سوالات کو جنم دیتا ہے

بین الاقوامی سیاست میں بعض اوقات چند واقعات ایسے مختصر وقفے میں رونما ہوتے ہیں کہ ان کے درمیان تعلق تلاش کرنا فطری محسوس ہونے لگتا ہے۔ اکتوبر 2026ء میں ہردیپ سنگھ پوری اور بدنامِ زمانہ امریکی مالیاتی شخصیت جیفری ایپسٹین کی تصاویر کا دوبارہ موضوعِ بحث بننا، امریکی وزیر خارجہ مارکو روبیو کا بھارت پہنچنا اور صدر ڈونلڈ ٹرمپ کا بھارت۔امریکا تجارتی معاہدے کو تکمیل کے قریب قرار دینا بھی اسی نوعیت کے واقعات ہیں۔ سوال یہ ہے کہ کیا یہ محض زمانی اتفاق ہے یا ان کے پس منظر میں کوئی وسیع تر سیاسی تناظر بھی موجود ہے؟

ہردیپ سنگھ پوری اور ایپسٹین کی تصاویر نے اس لیے سیاسی اہمیت اختیار کی کہ پوری پہلے اپنی ملاقاتوں کو ایک ادارہ جاتی وفد کے تناظر میں بیان کر چکے تھے۔ امریکی محکمۂ انصاف کے ریکارڈ سے سامنے آنے والی متعدد تصاویر میں دونوں افراد ایک میز کے آمنے سامنے دکھائی دیتے ہیں۔ پوری کے دفتر کا کہنا ہے کہ یہ پیشہ ورانہ ملاقاتیں تھیں، وزیر کو تقریباً ایک دہائی پرانی مخصوص ملاقات یاد نہیں اور وہ کبھی ایپسٹین کے جزیرے پر نہیں گئے۔ دوسری جانب، اپوزیشن نے ملاقاتوں کی نوعیت اور ان کے بارے میں دی گئی وضاحتوں پر سوال اٹھائے ہیں۔ یہ بات بھی ملحوظ رہنی چاہیے کہ کسی شخص سے ملاقات یا اس کے ساتھ تصویر موجود ہونا، بذاتِ خود کسی مجرمانہ سرگرمی میں ملوث ہونے کا ثبوت نہیں۔

اسی دوران امریکی وزیر خارجہ مارکو روبیو 20 اکتوبر کو بھارت پہنچے اور ممبئی میں وزیر خارجہ ایس جے شنکر سے ملاقات کی۔ ان مذاکرات میں تجارت، توانائی، دفاع، ٹیکنالوجی اور باہمی تعلقات کے مختلف پہلو زیرِ بحث آئے۔ روبیو نے تجارتی معاہدے کو حتمی شکل دینے میں نمایاں پیش رفت کی بات کی اور کہا کہ چند معاملات طے ہونا باقی ہیں۔ اس کے بعد صدر ٹرمپ نے بھی بیان دیا کہ دونوں ممالک معاہدے کے کافی قریب ہیں، تاہم ان کے بقول یہ معاہدہ سابقہ امریکی تجارتی معاہدوں سے مختلف نوعیت کا ہوگا۔ ابھی اس کے حتمی متن اور شرائط کی تفصیلات سامنے آنا باقی ہیں۔

ان دونوں واقعات کو ایک ساتھ دیکھنے سے ایک اہم سوال ضرور پیدا ہوتا ہے: کیا ایپسٹین سے متعلق تصاویر کی تشہیر اور تجارتی مذاکرات کے نازک مرحلے کے درمیان کوئی تعلق ہے؟ کانگریس رہنما راہل گاندھی نے تصاویر کے منظرِ عام پر آنے کے وقت کو روبیو کے دورے سے جوڑتے ہوئے بلیک میلنگ کا الزام نما سوال اٹھایا۔ تاہم، یہ ان کا سیاسی مؤقف ہے؛ دستیاب معلومات سے یہ ثابت نہیں ہوتا کہ تصاویر جاری کرنے کا مقصد تجارتی مذاکرات پر اثرانداز ہونا تھا، یا ان دونوں معاملات کے درمیان کوئی خفیہ رابطہ موجود ہے۔ مزید یہ کہ تصاویر امریکی محکمۂ انصاف کے ریکارڈ کا حصہ تھیں اور جنوری 2026ء میں جاری کردہ مجموعے میں شامل تھیں؛ اکتوبر میں ان کا سوشل میڈیا پر گردش کرنا اور پہلی مرتبہ سرکاری طور پر جاری ہونا دو الگ باتیں ہیں۔

اس معاملے کا ایک دوسرا پہلو بھی ہے۔ امریکا اور بھارت کے تعلقات محض تجارتی لین دین تک محدود نہیں۔ توانائی کی فراہمی، دفاعی تعاون، ٹیکنالوجی، عالمی سیاست اور روسی تیل کی خریداری جیسے امور بھی ان تعلقات پر اثرانداز ہوتے ہیں۔ روبیو کے دورے کے دوران امریکی جانب سے توانائی اور امریکی ٹیکنالوجی کی خریداری بڑھانے میں دلچسپی ظاہر کرنا اس بات کی یاد دہانی ہے کہ تجارتی معاہدے کی شرائط کے پیچھے وسیع تر معاشی اور تزویراتی مفادات کارفرما ہیں۔ بھارت کے لیے اصل اہمیت یہ ہوگی کہ کسی بھی معاہدے میں قومی مفادات، صنعتی ضروریات، کسانوں کے تحفظ اور برآمدی امکانات کے درمیان مناسب توازن قائم رہے۔

جمہوری معاشرے میں عوامی عہدے داروں کے روابط اور فیصلوں کے بارے میں سوال اٹھانا جائز ہے، اور حکومت کی ذمہ داری ہے کہ وہ مناسب وضاحت فراہم کرے۔ اسی طرح صحافت کا فرض بھی یہ ہے کہ وہ محض شبہات کو حقیقت کا درجہ نہ دے، بلکہ دستاویزات، بیانات اور قابلِ تصدیق شواہد کی بنیاد پر معاملات کا جائزہ لے۔

فی الحال ان تینوں واقعات کے درمیان زمانی قربت تو واضح ہے، لیکن ان کے باہمی خفیہ تعلق کا کوئی مصدقہ ثبوت سامنے نہیں آیا۔ اصل سوال کسی مفروضے کو حتمی نتیجہ قرار دینا نہیں، بلکہ یہ جاننا ہے کہ تجارتی معاہدے کی اصل شرائط کیا ہوں گی، پوری کی ملاقاتوں کے بارے میں مزید کون سی مستند معلومات سامنے آتی ہیں، اور دونوں حکومتیں عوامی سوالات کا کس قدر شفاف جواب دیتی ہیں۔ بین الاقوامی سیاست میں اتفاقات بھی اہم ہو سکتے ہیں، لیکن کسی نتیجے تک پہنچنے کے لیے قیاس آرائی سے زیادہ مضبوط شواہد درکار ہوتے ہیں۔

Diplomacy, Trade and the Epstein Files: Is There a Hidden Link?

Photographs involving Hardeep Singh Puri, Marco Rubio’s India visit and Donald Trump’s trade-deal remarks raise questions—but timing alone is not proof

In international politics, events unfolding within a short period often invite speculation about whether they are connected. The renewed circulation of photographs showing Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri with Jeffrey Epstein, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to India, and President Donald Trump’s statement that an India-US trade agreement is nearing completion have created precisely such a situation. The central question is whether these developments are merely coincidental or form part of a broader political context.

The photographs involving Puri and Epstein have attracted renewed attention because the minister had previously described his encounters with Epstein in the context of a delegation associated with the International Peace Institute. Several photographs in the US Department of Justice records show the two men seated across a table. Puri’s office has maintained that their interactions were professional, that the minister cannot recall the specific meeting depicted, and that he never visited Epstein’s island. Opposition leaders, meanwhile, have questioned the nature of the meetings and the explanations offered. It is important to distinguish legitimate questions about public accountability from allegations of criminal involvement: a photograph or a meeting, by itself, does not establish wrongdoing.

At the same time, Rubio arrived in India on October 20 and held talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Mumbai. Their discussions covered trade, energy, defence, technology and broader bilateral relations. Rubio described the trade negotiations as being close to completion, with a small number of issues remaining. Trump subsequently said that the two countries were “pretty close” to reaching an agreement, adding that the proposed deal would be different from previous US trade agreements. The final terms, however, have yet to be fully disclosed.

Viewed together, these developments raise an obvious question: could the circulation of the Epstein photographs have any connection with the sensitive stage of India-US trade negotiations? Congress leader Rahul Gandhi questioned the timing of the photographs’ circulation in relation to Rubio’s visit and raised the possibility of blackmail. That remains a political allegation, not an established finding. The available information does not demonstrate that the photographs were circulated to influence trade negotiations or that a covert connection exists between the two matters. Moreover, the photographs were already part of a US Justice Department dataset released in January 2026. Their renewed circulation on social media in October should not be confused with their original official release.

There is also a wider strategic dimension to the India-US relationship. The two countries’ engagement extends beyond trade to energy security, defence cooperation, technology, global diplomacy and differences over India’s purchases of Russian oil. During Rubio’s visit, Washington expressed interest in expanding India’s purchases of American energy and technology. This underlines the broader economic and strategic interests that may shape the eventual trade agreement. For India, the crucial consideration will be whether the final arrangement protects national interests while balancing industrial requirements, farmers’ concerns and export opportunities.

In a democracy, questions about the associations and conduct of public officials are legitimate. Governments have a responsibility to respond transparently to credible questions. Journalism, in turn, must distinguish documented facts from political claims and speculation rather than presenting suspicion as established truth.

For now, the chronological proximity of these three developments is evident, but no verified evidence establishes a hidden connection between them. The more consequential questions concern the actual terms of the proposed trade agreement, any further verifiable information about Puri’s interactions with Epstein, and the willingness of the governments concerned to address public scrutiny.

In international affairs, coincidences may invite investigation, but conclusions require evidence. The responsible approach is neither to dismiss legitimate questions nor to treat an unproven theory as fact. It is to follow the documents, examine the terms of the negotiations and insist on accountability wherever the evidence warrants it.
