Qatar, Türkiye, Pakistan and Indonesia sign a defence cooperation accord; Gaza death toll reaches 74,494; attacks reported on airports in Yemen
Iran reiterates readiness for diplomacy and defence
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that Tehran remains committed to pursuing a dignified and peaceful resolution to the conflict but is also fully prepared to defend itself.
Araghchi, writing in the Financial Times, said the White House had shown little willingness to reach an understanding, leaving limited grounds for optimism about progress in negotiations.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Washington could not expect meaningful dialogue while blockading and threatening Iran.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei accused the United States of fuelling regional instability and global economic insecurity through military attacks and sanctions. He alleged that Washington had attacked Iran twice in less than nine months while negotiations were under way.
Qatar, Türkiye, Pakistan and Indonesia sign defence accord
Qatar, Türkiye, Pakistan and Indonesia have signed a memorandum of understanding on defence cooperation in Doha.
According to Türkiye’s Defence Ministry, the agreement aims to strengthen defence capabilities, expand military training and joint exercises, promote research and development, and support cooperation between the four countries’ defence industries.
Qatar’s Defence Ministry said the arrangement would also encourage cooperation in military manufacturing. Potential areas of collaboration include producing components for defence systems, developing drone capabilities and transferring technology in the coming years.
The agreement comes amid heightened regional tensions and disruptions to transport networks, adding a new dimension to defence cooperation among the four countries.
Gaza death toll reaches 74,494
Gaza’s Health Ministry says at least 74,494 Palestinians have been killed and 175,604 wounded in Israel’s war on the enclave since October 2023.
According to the ministry, 1,534 Palestinians have been killed and 5,486 injured since the ceasefire announced in October 2024. A further 846 bodies have been recovered from beneath the rubble.
Seven people were reportedly killed and 24 wounded during the latest 24-hour reporting period.
Separately, reports from central Gaza say Israeli forces have moved the so-called Yellow Line further into the Maghazi refugee camp, accompanied by heavy gunfire and artillery shelling. Palestinians continue to face risks even in areas considered relatively safe.
Yemen condemns attacks on Aden and Al Rayyan airports
Yemen’s Ministry of Transport has condemned attacks involving missiles and drones targeting Aden International Airport and Al Rayyan Airport in the eastern city of Mukalla.
The ministry said three drones fell near Al Rayyan Airport’s runways. Aden Airport was also targeted, reportedly for the fourth time.
According to the statement, the attack occurred shortly after two flights departed for Oman and Cairo and moments after a plane carrying personnel from the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders landed.
Authorities halted or postponed two flights bound for Addis Ababa and Cairo and evacuated passengers and airport workers as a precaution. No casualties, injuries or significant damage were reported at Al Rayyan Airport.
The ministry said both airports would continue serving civilians and humanitarian flights despite the operational risks.
Taiz faces worsening shortages amid blockade
The humanitarian situation in Yemen’s city of Taiz is deteriorating as a prolonged blockade restricts access to essential supplies.
Local authorities report shortages of food and domestic cooking gas. Government forces have also reported military operations against Houthi positions and vehicles west of the city.
Reports of shelling in residential neighbourhoods and damage to civilian property have added to concerns about the impact of the fighting on residents.
French President Macron arrives in Saudi Arabia
French President Emmanuel Macron has arrived in Riyadh on an unscheduled final stop on his Gulf tour. He is expected to meet Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
According to the French president’s office, the visit aims to demonstrate solidarity with Saudi Arabia amid Houthi attacks, discuss regional security and advance efforts to diversify energy supplies.
Macron has also said Gulf partners have pledged additional energy supplies. His tour has included visits to Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Bahrain.
Israel faces growing international legal scrutiny over Gaza
Israel continues to face international legal scrutiny over its conduct in Gaza, including proceedings at the International Court of Justice and actions at the International Criminal Court.
Political analyst Xavier Abu Eid, a former Palestine Liberation Organization communications director, told Al Jazeera that the international community had failed to ensure meaningful accountability for Israel’s actions.
He said discussions about imposing sanctions on Israel were becoming more prominent, although he criticised the European Union and other international actors for failing to exert sufficient pressure to change Israeli policy.
The legal proceedings and political debate over sanctions have intensified calls for accountability, although the outcome of legal processes and any potential sanctions remain uncertain.
Israeli election could bring a shift in Palestinian policy
With Israeli voters due to go to the polls on October 27, former justice minister Yossi Beilin has suggested that a victory for the centre-left could lead to a significant change in policy towards the Palestinians.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Beilin said the political test would be whether a new government followed through on commitments associated with the US proposal for ending the Gaza war, including a pathway towards Palestinian statehood.
He said the outcome would depend on whether those commitments were translated into concrete policy rather than remaining political statements.
Oil tanker reportedly hit off Iraq’s coast
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency has received a delayed report that a projectile struck an oil tanker about 30 nautical miles, or 55 kilometres, off the coast of al-Faw in Iraq.
The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday. The crew were said to be safe, with no reported damage to the vessel or environmental impact.
Regional tensions test the prospects for peace
The continuing US-Iran impasse, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, attacks on Yemeni airports and closer defence cooperation among regional and Asian partners underline the complexity of the current Middle East crisis.
Diplomatic initiatives remain in discussion, but military operations and security concerns continue to shape events on the ground. Protecting civilians, maintaining humanitarian access and restoring meaningful negotiations remain urgent priorities.
