Southern India is approaching a significant seasonal transition, with the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon coinciding with growing indications of the northeast monsoon’s arrival. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a fresh spell of rainfall across several parts of the southern peninsula, including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and Karnataka.
According to the weather outlook reported on October 13, rainfall activity is expected to intensify from Wednesday and Thursday. Isolated heavy showers, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are likely in several areas. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are expected to experience the initial phase of the wet spell, followed by increased rainfall activity in Kerala and Mahe from Thursday.
The IMD forecast indicates fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over Kerala and Mahe for four days from Thursday. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and South Interior Karnataka may experience rainfall for three days from Friday, while Coastal Karnataka and North Interior Karnataka could see further rain over the weekend.
Rain is also likely over Rayalaseema on Thursday and Friday, while parts of Telangana may receive rainfall for four days from Thursday.
Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal could continue to experience isolated to scattered rainfall over the following six days. Some locations may receive heavier showers, although rainfall intensity and distribution are likely to vary from place to place.
Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are also forecast in parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Kerala, Mahe and Rayalaseema on Thursday and Friday. Several districts of Karnataka and Telangana may experience similar conditions during the coming days.
Earlier forecasts had indicated the possible formation of a low-pressure area over the southeastern Bay of Bengal. However, the latest weather assessment suggests that attention has shifted from that particular system towards a trough connecting cyclonic circulations over different parts of the Bay of Bengal.
This developing pattern could strengthen easterly winds and help establish the conditions required for the northeast monsoon to set in over the southern peninsula.
Forecast guidance from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts also suggests that a substantial share of the early rainfall may be directed towards the sea, potentially affecting the distribution of showers along the Tamil Nadu and Sri Lankan coasts.
The onset of the northeast monsoon is considered likely around October 15, although its formal declaration will depend on the prevailing meteorological conditions and confirmation by the IMD.
The northeast monsoon is particularly important for Tamil Nadu, where rainfall between October and December plays a major role in agriculture, reservoir levels and groundwater replenishment.
Historical records show considerable variation in seasonal rainfall. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal recorded exceptionally high rainfall during the northeast monsoon in 2015 and 2021, while 2016 witnessed a severe rainfall deficit.
Such fluctuations underline the importance of not only the total rainfall received but also its timing, geographical distribution and intensity. While sustained rainfall can help replenish water resources and support farming, intense downpours can also cause urban flooding and disrupt transport and daily activities.
Kerala and Mahe, too, have experienced considerable year-to-year variation in northeast monsoon rainfall, highlighting the uncertainty that accompanies the seasonal transition.
With rain, lightning and strong winds expected in several regions, residents, commuters, farmers and fishermen should remain alert to local weather advisories. People should avoid exposed locations during thunderstorms, stay away from trees and unsafe structures during lightning and strong winds, and exercise caution in low-lying areas vulnerable to waterlogging.
Unnecessary travel during intense rainfall should be avoided wherever possible, and residents should follow official instructions issued by local authorities and the IMD.
Alif News Perspective: For southern India, the northeast monsoon is far more than a seasonal change. It influences water security, agricultural livelihoods and the everyday lives of millions. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether the expected rainfall helps address the shortfall left by the retreating southwest monsoon or creates fresh challenges for communities and civic authorities. Timely information, responsible preparedness and public cooperation will be essential as the region enters this important phase of the seasonal calendar.
