Rahul Gandhi-Led INDIA Bloc Meets President Murmu, Demands CEC’s Resignation Over Alleged Electoral Irregularities

New Delhi, October 9, 2026: A delegation of Opposition leaders from the INDIA bloc, led by Rahul Gandhi, met President Droupadi Murmu on Friday to raise concerns over alleged irregularities in the electoral system. Following the meeting, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha said the President had sought evidence of alleged “vote chori” and asserted that the Opposition was ready to present the material it claimed to have made public.

There was no official statement from the President’s office on the discussions.

Rahul Gandhi said the Opposition would meet the Chief Justice of India on Monday and submit a memorandum. The delegation also demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and called for measures to ensure transparency in the electoral process.

The memorandum submitted to the President outlined four major demands:

  1. The resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the repeal of the 2023 law that provides lifelong legal protection to the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners.
  2. The immediate suspension of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and restoration of the names of 13.3 crore voters allegedly deleted from the rolls.
  3. A return to paper ballots for all elections.
  4. Cancellation of Assembly elections held over the past two years in which, according to the Opposition, conclusive evidence of alleged vote theft had been presented.

Rahul Gandhi led Opposition MPs and party leaders in a march from Parliament towards Rashtrapati Bhavan. While a delegation of ten leaders subsequently met the President, other Opposition members staged a sit-in at Kartavya Path, raising slogans against alleged electoral irregularities.

Earlier, around 150 MPs and other INDIA bloc leaders had gathered in Parliament’s Central Hall. Sixteen leaders representing sixteen different political parties signed the memorandum submitted to the President.

Delhi Protest: Security Deployment and Internet Restrictions

The student-led movement known as the Cockroach Janta Party has called for a protest at Jantar Mantar on Saturday, October 10. According to the report, the government deployed thousands of police personnel and suspended internet services within a four-kilometre radius of Jantar Mantar for 24 hours, beginning at 10 pm on Friday.

The reported closure of metro stations and cancellation of train services in anticipation of the protest also triggered political criticism.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused the government of acting out of fear. BJP leader JP Nadda, however, dismissed the Opposition’s allegations as an attempt to find excuses following electoral defeats. Referring to recent by-election results, Nadda maintained that public confidence in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the NDA remained strong.

Electoral Transparency at the Centre of Political Dispute

The latest confrontation has intensified the political debate over the functioning of the Election Commission of India. While the Opposition is demanding accountability and changes to the electoral process, the ruling BJP has rejected its allegations as politically motivated.

The next developments will depend on how the relevant constitutional institutions respond to the Opposition’s memorandum and the evidence it says it has presented.
