Delhi: Railways Cancel Several Trains Ahead of CJP Protest
New Delhi, October 9, 2026
Indian Railways has announced the cancellation of several mail and express train services scheduled to arrive at New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations during a ten-hour window on Saturday, October 10, amid a planned protest in the national capital.
According to The Indian Express, the affected services will remain cancelled between 4 am and 2 pm. A senior railway official said the precautionary measure was intended to minimise inconvenience to passengers amid anticipated severe traffic congestion around the two stations. Railway officials also reported that around 5,000 passengers had missed their trains on Thursday.
The protest has been called by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar. The party is demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities and concerns surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
In a statement, the Ministry of Railways said intelligence inputs and traffic advisories indicated the possibility of severe congestion around New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations between 4 am and 2 pm on October 10.
As a precaution, mail and express trains departing from their originating stations after 2 pm on October 9, and scheduled to arrive at either station during the specified period on October 10, have been cancelled at source.
Eastern Railway has cancelled two Rajdhani Express services scheduled to depart from West Bengal on Friday, October 9: the 12301 Howrah–New Delhi Rajdhani Express and the 12313 Sealdah–New Delhi Rajdhani Express.
Several services connecting Delhi with Rajasthan have also been cancelled. These include trains operating on the Udaipur City–Hazrat Nizamuddin, Hazrat Nizamuddin–Udaipur City, Shri Ganganagar–Tilak Bridge, Tilak Bridge–Bhiwani and Sirsa–Tilak Bridge routes.
The planned demonstration over alleged electoral-roll irregularities has triggered extensive transport-related precautions in the capital. The cancellation of train services is expected to disrupt travel plans and create difficulties for passengers travelling to and from Delhi.
While authorities have cited public convenience and anticipated traffic congestion as reasons for the decision, the situation also raises broader questions about the balance between security arrangements, the right to peaceful protest and the uninterrupted movement of ordinary citizens.
