DMK Makes U-Turn on Rahul Gandhi’s Delhi Protest
New Delhi: The DMK has changed its position within a day over Rahul Gandhi’s protest march in Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. On Tuesday, the party criticised the Congress leader over his alleged silence on the deletion of voters in Tamil Nadu. On Wednesday, however, the party came out in support of his protest.
DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan said, “How can elections be fair if Gyanesh Kumar, holding a high post, is anti-democratic? He should definitely be removed. It is the right of citizens to fight against the government’s wrongdoings, and that is what Rahul Gandhi did yesterday. This government doesn’t want Rahul Gandhi to protest against Gyanesh Kumar.”
A day earlier, DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai had questioned Rahul Gandhi’s position and criticised him for allegedly failing to give the same attention to the deletion of voters in Tamil Nadu during the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
On Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, led an INDIA bloc protest march from Parliament to the Election Commission’s office. The protesters demanded that the Special Intensive Revision process be scrapped and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar be removed.
The DMK has alleged that millions of voters were removed from Tamil Nadu’s electoral rolls during the SIR exercise. The regional party also stayed away from last week’s INDIA bloc meeting, which was held to formulate a strategy for a nationwide protest against Gyanesh Kumar, although it had indicated its support for the broader issue.
The change in the DMK’s position comes amid a major political realignment following the 2026 Assembly elections. The decades-old DMK-Congress alliance has collapsed, with the Congress breaking away from its longtime ally and supporting actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in forming the government. The fallout has since deepened tensions between the two parties.
