After a major Mumbai demonstration, the youth-led party calls for nationwide mobilisation over alleged voter deletions and electoral irregularities.
Following a large demonstration at Mumbai’s historic Shivaji Park, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has announced a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on October 10, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke warned that if Kumar did not step down, young people from across the country would march to Delhi for what he described as “Jantar Mantar 2.0”. He called the proposed agitation peaceful and urged citizens committed to free and fair elections to join the movement.
The Mumbai protest drew a large gathering of young men and women despite intense afternoon heat and police barricades. Protesters raised concerns over alleged voter deletions, electoral transparency and the appointment process for Election Commissioners.
CJP leaders demanded Kumar’s resignation and called for criminal proceedings against him. They also sought the freezing of the 2025 electoral rolls and the repeal of the 2023 law governing the appointment of Election Commissioners.
Dipke alleged that 13 crore voters had been deleted from electoral rolls over two years. Citing Maharashtra, Delhi, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, he claimed that alleged irregularities in voter lists had influenced electoral outcomes. These allegations have not been independently verified.
The demonstration also featured accusations against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party over its alleged attempts to weaken regional political parties and undermine democratic institutions.
The protest received support from Shiv Sena (UBT), left-wing student organisations and several prominent public figures. Actors Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi, filmmakers Vishal Bhardwaj and Hansal Mehta, musician Vishal Dadlani, and Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, were among those present.
Coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti, the gathering featured messages of non-violence, simplicity and democratic responsibility. Tricolours, placards, slogans and songs added to the atmosphere of the demonstration.
The October 10 protest in Delhi is expected to be a significant moment for the CJP as it seeks to expand its mobilisation beyond Mumbai. At its heart lies a broader democratic question: how can public confidence in elections be maintained amid allegations of voter exclusion and electoral manipulation?
