Editorial
Kannada and Urdu are not voices of confrontation, but two expressions of India’s rich and shared cultural heritage.
A proposal to celebrate Urdu on the grand steps of Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru has sparked a debate in Karnataka, raising important questions about language, cultural identity and democratic tolerance.
Karnataka Minister U. T. Khader proposed holding an Urdu Habba on November 9 to showcase Urdu literature, culture, heritage and artistic traditions. The proposal encountered opposition from certain pro-Kannada organisations and opposition leaders, who objected to the choice of venue. Following the controversy, the minister expressed willingness to reconsider the location. The Chief Minister’s Office subsequently clarified that no permission had been granted for non-governmental events on the steps of Vidhana Soudha.
But beyond the immediate controversy over the venue lies a much deeper question: Can a society that takes pride in its linguistic identity also embrace the cultural expressions of others?
Urdu is not the exclusive inheritance of any one religion, community or region. It is an integral part of India’s composite cultural heritage. Its literary traditions, enriched by poets, philosophers, reformers and storytellers, have shaped the nation’s intellectual and emotional landscape. From the timeless poetry of Mir and Ghalib to the social realism of Premchand, Urdu has given expression to the aspirations, anxieties and dreams of generations.
Kannada, equally, is a language of extraordinary literary depth and historical significance. It represents Karnataka’s cultural identity and carries the collective memory of its people. Respecting Urdu does not diminish Kannada, just as celebrating Kannada does not require the exclusion of Urdu.
The real danger emerges when language becomes a political boundary rather than a bridge between communities. Cultural pride is a natural and valuable sentiment, but when it is transformed into suspicion of other languages, it risks undermining the very social harmony it is meant to protect.
At the same time, Vidhana Soudha is no ordinary public venue. It is a powerful symbol of Karnataka’s democratic institutions and the people’s elected representation. Its use must be governed by established rules, administrative considerations and institutional dignity. The cultural importance of an event cannot automatically override legitimate questions concerning the suitability of its venue.
Yet a disagreement over the location of a cultural celebration should never become a pretext for questioning the legitimacy of the language itself. If administrative or procedural objections exist, they deserve to be addressed through dialogue, transparent decisions and mutually acceptable alternatives.
The responsibility rests particularly with the government. Its role is not merely to organise cultural programmes but to create an atmosphere in which every linguistic community feels respected and included. The promotion of Urdu, Kannada and other Indian languages should be viewed as complementary efforts rather than competing political projects.
A democratic society is measured not by how loudly it celebrates its own identity, but by how generously it accommodates the identities of others.
India’s civilisational strength has always rested on its ability to absorb diversity without surrendering its unity. Its languages are not barriers separating communities; they are bridges connecting different histories, traditions and human experiences.
When languages become instruments of division, society loses its harmony. When they become bridges of understanding, a nation discovers the true meaning of unity.
