فنکارانہ آزادی پر قدغن: جب دستاویزی فلم غداری بن جائے

اسرائیل کے وزیرِ ثقافت مکی زوہر کی جانب سے فلم سازوں یوول ابراہام اور راچل سور کی شہریت منسوخ کرنے کی حالیہ دھمکی نے آزادیٔ اظہارِ رائے اور ریاستی بیانیے کے درمیان بڑھتے ہوئے تناؤ کو ایک نئی بحث دے دی ہے۔ فلم سازوں پر "ریاست کے خلاف غداری” کا سنگین الزام عائد کیا گیا ہے، اور اس کا سبب ان کی حال ہی میں ریلیز ہونے والی دستاویزی فلم ‘نازا’ (NAZA) بنی ہے۔ یہ اقدام جہاں ایک طرف ریاست کی طرف سے تنقید کو دبانے کی کوشش ظاہر کرتا ہے، وہاں دوسری طرف بین الاقوامی سطح پر انسانی حقوق اور صحافتی آزادی کے علمبرداروں کے لیے ایک سنگین لمحۂ فکریہ ہے۔

تنازعے کا بنیادی سبب اور فلم کے انکشافات
یہ 80 منٹ کی دستاویزی فلم محض کوئی عام کہانی نہیں، بلکہ اسرائیلی فوج اور انٹیلیجنس کے 24 ایسے مفرور یا راز فاش کرنے والے اہلکاروں (Whistleblowers) کے انٹرویوز پر مبنی ہے جنہوں نے نظام کے اندر کی کہانیاں دنیا کے سامنے رکھی ہیں۔ فلم میں دعویٰ کیا گیا ہے کہ غزہ پر بمباری کے لیے مصنوعی ذہانت (AI) پر مبنی ٹارگٹنگ سسٹمز کا استعمال کیا جا رہا ہے، جہاں عام شہریوں کا جانی نقصان کوئی حادثہ نہیں بلکہ ایک باقاعدہ اور سوچی سمجھی حسابی حکمتِ عملی کا حصہ ہے۔ فلم کا نام ‘نازا’ بھی عبرانی زبان کا ایک مخفف ہے جو ممکنہ سویلین ہلاکتوں کے شمار کے لیے استعمال ہوتا ہے۔ یہ انکشافات اسرائیلی حکومت کے اس سرکاری موقف کو براہِ راست چیلنج کرتے ہیں جس میں وہ عام شہریوں کو نشانہ بنانے کی تردید کرتی ہے۔

ریاستی ردِعمل اور سیاسی دباؤ
وینس فلم فیسٹیول میں ‘اسپیشل جیوری پرائز’ جیتنے اور حاضرین کی جانب سے ریکارڈ 25 منٹ تک کھڑے ہو کر داد وصول کرنے والی اس فلم کو اسرائیلی قیادت نے برداشت نہیں کیا۔ وزیرِ ثقافت مکی زوہر نے فلم سازوں پر سوشل میڈیا کے ذریعے یہ الزام لگایا کہ وہ "دنیا بھر کے یہود مخالفوں سے داد پانے کے لیے اپنے وطن کو نقصان پہنچانے” پر تلے ہوئے ہیں۔ اس سخت گیر موقف کو دیگر انتہا پسند حکومتی وزراء جیسے وزیرِ داخلہ سیکورٹی اتامار بین غویر کی بھی تائید حاصل ہوئی، جنہوں نے فلم سازوں کو ملک کے لیے "رسوائی اور شرمندگی کا باعث” قرار دیا۔

جمہوریت اور آزادیٔ صحافت کا امتحان
اگرچہ اسرائیلی فوج نے فلم کے الزامات کو یکسر مسترد کر دیا ہے، لیکن حکومت کا فلم سازوں کو قانونی اور آئینی طور پر نشانہ بنانے کا ارادہ تشویشناک ہے۔ اگرچہ شہریت منسوخ کرنے کا حتمی اختیار وزارتِ داخلہ کے پاس ہے، جس نے ابھی تک کوئی باقاعدہ کارروائی نہیں کی، لیکن محض یہ دھمکی ہی فنکاروں کو خوفزدہ کرنے کے لیے کافی ہے۔ عالمی فلمی برادری اور انسانی حقوق کی تنظیموں نے اسے آزادیٔ اظہار پر ایک براہِ راست حملہ قرار دیا ہے۔

ایک ایسی ریاست جو خود کو خطے کی واحد جمہوریت کہتی ہے، اس کے لیے اپنے ہی شہریوں کو ان کے فنکارانہ اور صحافتی کام کی پاداش میں بے وطن کرنے کی دھمکی دینا، اس کے جمہوری دعووں کی نفی کرتا ہے۔ یہ اداریہ اس بات پر زور دیتا ہے کہ سچائی کو چھپانے یا آوازوں کو دبانے سے مسائل حل نہیں ہوتے، بلکہ یہ اقدامات ریاست کے اندرونی خوف کو مزید عیاں کرتے ہیں۔

Silencing Narrative: When Documentary Filmmaking is Branded as Treason

The recent threat by Israel’s Culture Minister, Miki Zohar, to revoke the citizenship of documentary filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor has ignited a fierce global debate on the boundaries of artistic freedom and state allegiance. Accused of "treason against the state” for their compelling documentary NAZA, these filmmakers find themselves in the crosshairs of a government increasingly intolerant of dissent. This calculated political backlash signals a dangerous precedent where investigative journalism and cinematic exposure are weaponized into acts of national betrayal.

The Crux of the Controversy: Behind the Lens of ‘NAZA’
The friction stems from the explosive contents of the 80-minute documentary, which serves as a platform for 24 Israeli military and intelligence whistleblowers. These insiders lift the veil on the military’s purported deployment of AI-powered targeting systems in the bombardment of Gaza. They allege that civilian casualties are not merely collateral damage or isolated operational errors, but part of a deeply calculated, systemic military formula. The title NAZA—a Hebrew acronym used as shorthand for tracking estimated civilian casualties—strikes at the heart of the military’s official narrative, which categorically rejects any systematic targeting of civilians.

The State’s Backlash and Right-Wing Rhetoric
The film’s international acclaim has clearly aggravated state officials. Premiering at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, NAZA won the Special Jury Prize and received an unprecedented 25-minute standing ovation. In response, Culture Minister Zohar launched a scathing social media campaign, accusing the directors of being willing to "harm their homeland in order to receive applause from antisemites around the world.” This rhetoric was quickly amplified by far-right figures like National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who publicly branded the filmmakers "a disgrace and an embarrassment” to the nation.

A Test for Freedom of Expression
While the Israeli military denies the film’s allegations, the government’s threat to deploy legal mechanisms against its own citizens is deeply alarming. Israeli law does permit the revocation of citizenship in extreme cases of "disloyalty” or treason. Although the Ministry of Interior—the sole body with the actual authority over nationality status—has not officially executed an order, the mere weaponization of citizenship serves as a chilling deterrent for journalists, artists, and whistleblowers.

International human rights bodies and global film organizations have rightfully condemned this move as a direct assault on free speech. For a state that regularly prides itself on its democratic principles, threatening to strip citizens of their nationality for exposing internal military functions exposes a fragile intolerance to accountability. True democratic resilience is measured not by how effectively a state silences its critics, but by its willingness to withstand the uncomfortable truths they unearth.
