Biryani or Pulao? A New Cultural Debate Simmers in Haridwar
Haridwar: In the sacred city on the banks of the Ganges, the latest public debate is not about politics or economics, but about the name of a popular dish. Some Hindu saints and religious organizations have urged food vendors to replace the term “Veg Biryani” with “Veg Pulao,” arguing that the word biryani is commonly associated with non-vegetarian cuisine.
According to reports, saints associated with Pandit Adhir Kaushik and Swami Kartik Giri visited food stalls around Devpura Chowk and Tulsi Chowk, placing stickers that read “Veg Pulao” over existing “Veg Biryani” signboards. Supporters of the campaign maintain that in a religious city like Haridwar, food terminology should reflect local cultural and spiritual sentiments.
The development has sparked diverse reactions on social media. While some people have welcomed the move as an effort to preserve cultural identity, others argue that the names of food items evolve through history, culinary traditions, and commercial practice, and should not be altered merely on ideological grounds.
Amid the debate, however, one reality remains unchanged: changing a name does not alter the history or identity of a dish. Even if “Veg Biryani” is renamed “Veg Pulao” in a particular locality, the global culinary world will continue to recognize biryani as biryani and pulao as pulao. Each dish has its own distinct cooking style, flavor profile, and historical heritage.
Many observers, including members of the Muslim community, view the controversy with indifference. They argue that whether a dish is called biryani, pulao, or something else altogether makes little difference to their daily lives. What matters, they say, is the quality of the food and mutual respect among communities, rather than disputes over nomenclature.
As of now, there has been no official confirmation of any ban or legal restriction concerning the use of the term “Veg Biryani.” Nevertheless, the discussion has reopened a broader question: Are cultures defined by names alone, or by the traditions, histories, and lived experiences that give those names meaning?
“Changing a word may alter a signboard, but it does not erase a culinary legacy.”
