کیتھولک دنیا کے روحانی پیشوا پوپ لیو چہاردہم نے اپنی پہلی انسائیکلیکل Magnifica Humanitas میں مصنوعی ذہانت (AI) کے بے قابو پھیلاؤ پر گہری تشویش ظاہر کرتے ہوئے کہا ہے کہ AI کو “غیر مسلح” کیا جانا ضروری ہے، ورنہ یہ طاقت، تسلط، محرومی اور حتیٰ کہ موت کا ایک نیا ذریعہ بن سکتی ہے۔

پوپ لیو نے خبردار کیا کہ دنیا اس وقت “زیادہ طاقتور الگورتھمز” اور “بڑے ڈیٹا سیٹس” کی دوڑ میں شامل ہو چکی ہے، جہاں تجارتی مفادات اور جغرافیائی غلبے کی خواہش انسانیت کے اجتماعی مفاد پر غالب آتی جا رہی ہے۔ ان کے مطابق اگر AI پر صرف بڑی نجی کمپنیوں کا اختیار رہا تو مستقبل میں نئی قسم کی غلامی جنم لے سکتی ہے۔

انہوں نے زور دے کر کہا کہ مصنوعی ذہانت کے دور میں حکومتوں کو اپنی ذمہ داری سے دستبردار نہیں ہونا چاہیے۔ مضبوط قانونی ڈھانچے، آزاد نگرانی، باشعور صارفین اور انسانی اقدار کے تحفظ کے بغیر AI ایک خطرناک ہتھیار میں تبدیل ہو سکتی ہے۔

پوپ لیو نے AI کا موازنہ ایٹمی توانائی سے کرتے ہوئے کہا کہ جیسے ایٹمی طاقت کو انسانیت کی بھلائی کے لیے استعمال کیا جانا چاہیے، ویسے ہی مصنوعی ذہانت بھی پوری انسانیت کے مشترکہ مفاد کے لیے ہونی چاہیے، نہ کہ چند طاقتور اداروں کے تسلط کے لیے۔

43 ہزار الفاظ پر مشتمل یہ دستاویز نہ صرف مذہبی حلقوں بلکہ ٹیکنالوجی کی دنیا میں بھی ایک اہم فکری مداخلت تصور کی جا رہی ہے۔ اس موقع پر AI ماہرین بھی ویٹیکن میں موجود تھے، جن میں امریکی کمپنی Anthropic کے شریک بانی کرسٹوفر اولاہ بھی شامل تھے۔

یہ بیان ایسے وقت میں سامنے آیا ہے جب دنیا تیزی سے AI پر انحصار کر رہی ہے، لیکن ساتھ ہی یہ سوال بھی شدت اختیار کر رہا ہے کہ کیا انسان مشینوں کا مالک رہے گا یا خود ان کے فیصلوں کا تابع بنتا جائے گا۔

A powerful voice from the Vatican has urged the world to pause and reflect on the future of humanity in the age of artificial intelligence.

Pope Leo XIV, in his first encyclical titled Magnifica Humanitas (“Magnificent Humanity”), warned that artificial intelligence must be “disarmed” before it becomes an instrument of domination, exclusion, and even death.

The pontiff expressed deep concern over the global race for increasingly powerful algorithms and massive datasets, driven by geopolitical ambitions and commercial competition. According to Pope Leo, leaving the ownership of AI data solely in private hands could pave the way for “new forms of slavery” in the modern world.

Calling for urgent political and ethical intervention, he stressed that governments must not surrender their responsibilities to technology corporations. Strong legal frameworks, independent oversight, informed citizens, and protections for workers and children are essential if AI is to remain a force for human welfare rather than control.

Comparing artificial intelligence to nuclear energy, Pope Leo stated that both possess immense power and therefore must serve the common good of humanity instead of becoming tools of dominance for a select few.

The 43,000-word document is already being viewed as one of the most significant moral reflections on AI in recent years. AI researchers and technology experts, including Anthropic co-founder Christopher Olah, joined the Vatican presentation, signalling the growing global concern surrounding the ethical future of intelligent machines.

At a time when the world is rapidly embracing automation and machine learning, Pope Leo’s message raises a profound question: Will humanity continue to guide technology, or will technology begin to shape the destiny of humanity itself?
