جسٹس سوریہ کانت   نے ایک مقدمے کی سماعت کے دوران بعض بے روزگار نوجوانوں کے بارے میں سخت ریمارکس دیتے ہوئے کہا کہ کچھ لوگ، جو پیشہ ورانہ میدان میں اپنی جگہ نہیں بنا پاتے، بعد میں میڈیا، سوشل میڈیا یا آر ٹی آئی کارکن بن کر پورے نظام پر حملے شروع کر دیتے ہیں۔

سپریم کورٹ کی بنچ، جس میں جسٹس Joymalya Bagchi بھی شامل تھے، ایک وکیل کی جانب سے سینئر ایڈووکیٹ کے درجے کے حصول سے متعلق عرضی پر سماعت کر رہی تھی۔ عدالت نے درخواست گزار کے طرزِ عمل پر سخت ناراضی ظاہر کرتے ہوئے کہا کہ  کا اعزاز محض حیثیت یا زینت کے لیے نہیں بلکہ پیشہ ورانہ وقار اور کردار کی بنیاد پر دیا جاتا ہے۔

چیف جسٹس نے کہا کہ معاشرے میں پہلے ہی ایسے “طفیلی عناصر” موجود ہیں جو ہر ادارے اور نظام کو نشانہ بناتے ہیں، اور عدالت یہ نہیں چاہتی کہ مزید لوگ اس روش کا حصہ بنیں۔ انہوں نے سوشل میڈیا پر استعمال ہونے والی زبان اور وکیل کے طرزِ گفتگو پر بھی سوال اٹھایا۔

عدالت نے اس موقع پر وکالت کی ڈگریوں کی صداقت پر بھی تشویش ظاہر کی اور کہا کہ بہت سے ایسے افراد موجود ہیں جن کی تعلیمی اسناد کی جانچ ضروری محسوس ہوتی ہے، مگر متعلقہ ادارے ووٹ بینک کی سیاست کے باعث اس معاملے میں سنجیدگی نہیں دکھاتے۔

بعد ازاں درخواست گزار وکیل نے عدالت سے معذرت کرتے ہوئے اپنی عرضی واپس لینے کی اجازت مانگی، جسے عدالت نے منظور کر لیا۔

یہ ریمارکس اب قانونی حلقوں، میڈیا اور سوشل میڈیا میں ایک نئی بحث کو جنم دے رہے ہیں کہ تنقید اور ادارہ مخالف رویے کے درمیان حد کہاں قائم ہوتی ہے، اور کیا ایسے الفاظ عدالتی منصب کے وقار کے مطابق ہیں یا نہیں۔

چیف جسٹس کی وضاحت، میڈیا پر غلط حوالہ دینے کا الزام
سوریہ کانت نے اپنے متنازع ریمارکس پر وضاحت پیش کرتے ہوئے کہا ہے کہ میڈیا کے ایک حصے نے ان کے الفاظ کو غلط انداز میں پیش کیا۔
چیف جسٹس نے کہا کہ ان کا مقصد ملک کے نوجوانوں کی توہین ہرگز نہیں تھا بلکہ وہ ان افراد پر تنقید کر رہے تھے جو جعلی اور فرضی ڈگریوں کے ذریعے وکالت اور دیگر پیشوں میں داخل ہوئے ہیں۔ ان کے مطابق ایسے لوگ بعض اوقات میڈیا، سوشل میڈیا اور دیگر “باعزت شعبوں” میں بھی جگہ بنا لیتے ہیں اور یہی عناصر “طفیلی” کردار ادا کرتے ہیں۔
انہوں نے کہا:
"یہ کہنا بالکل بے بنیاد ہے کہ میں نے ملک کے نوجوانوں پر تنقید کی۔ مجھے ہندوستان کے نوجوانوں پر فخر ہے، اور وہ ترقی یافتہ ہندوستان کے ستون ہیں۔”
یہ وضاحت اس وقت سامنے آئی جب سوشل میڈیا پر ان کے سابقہ ریمارکس شدید تنقید کی زد میں آگئے۔ مختلف صارفین نے چیف جسٹس کے الفاظ کو غیر مناسب قرار دیا، جبکہ بعض طنزیہ تبصروں اور میمز کے ذریعے ردعمل ظاہر کرتے رہے۔
قانونی اور صحافتی حلقوں میں اب یہ بحث جاری ہے کہ عدالتی شخصیات کے بیانات کو کس تناظر میں پیش کیا جائے، اور آیا میڈیا نے واقعی الفاظ کو سیاق و سباق سے ہٹ کر نشر کیا یا اصل ریمارکس ہی عوامی ردعمل کا سبب بنے۔

“Youngsters Like Cockroaches” — CJI Remarks Trigger Debate

Surya Kant sparked controversy after making sharp remarks during a Supreme Court hearing, stating that some unemployed youngsters, unable to establish themselves professionally, later “become media persons, social media activists, or RTI activists” and begin attacking the system.

The bench, also comprising Justice Joymalya Bagchi, was hearing a petition related to the conferment of Senior Advocate designation on a lawyer. Expressing strong displeasure over the petitioner’s conduct, the court observed that the title of Senior Advocate is not a decorative status symbol but an honour earned through professional dignity and ethical conduct.

The Chief Justice remarked that society already has enough “parasites” who constantly target institutions and the system, and questioned whether the petitioner wished to join them. He also referred to the language allegedly used by the lawyer on social media platforms.

The court further raised concerns regarding the authenticity of law degrees held by some advocates and observed that many such credentials deserved verification. It added that concerned institutions often avoid strict action due to electoral and institutional pressures.

Eventually, the petitioner apologised before the bench and sought permission to withdraw the plea, which the court allowed.

The remarks have since triggered widespread debate within legal circles, media forums, and social platforms about the boundary between criticism and hostility toward institutions, and whether such language suits the dignity of constitutional offices.

CJI Clarifies Remarks, Accuses Section of Media of Misquoting Him
Surya Kant has issued a clarification regarding his controversial remarks about unemployed youth, stating that a section of the media misrepresented his oral observations made during a court hearing.
The Chief Justice said his criticism was specifically directed at individuals who allegedly entered professions such as law through fake or bogus degrees. According to him, similar elements had also “sneaked into” media, social media, and other respected professions, which is why he described them as “parasites.”
Rejecting allegations that he insulted the nation’s youth, the CJI stated:
“It is totally baseless to suggest that I criticised the youth of our nation. I am proud of India’s young generation, and they are the pillars of a developed India.”
The clarification came after widespread backlash erupted on social media following reports of his earlier comments comparing some unemployed youngsters to “cockroaches.” Several users criticised the language as insensitive and unbecoming of a constitutional office, while others responded with satire and online campaigns.
The episode has now sparked a broader debate in legal and media circles over the responsibilities of public institutions, the role of media framing, and the growing tension between judicial authority and public criticism in the digital age.
