Will Future Wars Be Fought by Artificial Intelligence? — Man or Algorithm

Throughout human history, wars have always been fought by human beings. At times with swords, at times with cannons, and in modern times with missiles. Yet in the twenty-first century a new face of war is gradually emerging—one in which the figure behind the battlefield is not a soldier, but an algorithm powered by artificial intelligence.

Amid the recent global tensions, a startling claim surfaced suggesting that the alleged plan to target Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, involved the use of artificial intelligence and cloud-based intelligence systems. According to several reports, advanced AI platforms analyzed massive volumes of data—satellite imagery, surveillance cameras, communication networks, and intelligence inputs—to determine when and where a target might be most vulnerable.

It is said that for years, data from Tehran’s traffic cameras and monitoring systems had been quietly collected. From this information a detailed behavioral map was constructed—what intelligence experts call a “pattern of life.” This analysis examines a person’s daily movements, meetings, travel routes, and security routines. Once gathered, the data is processed through powerful cloud-computing systems that evaluate countless possibilities before identifying the moment when a strike might be most effective.

Such operations do not occur in isolation. They are part of a complex technological process in which artificial intelligence reviews thousands of potential scenarios and presents decision-makers with a limited number of strategic options. In military terminology this process is often described as “kill-chain compression,” the rapid reduction of time between identifying a target and executing an attack.

Yet within this technological narrative lies a profound and troubling question: will future wars be decided not by human judgment, but by machines?

Technology experts insist that artificial intelligence does not wage wars on its own; it merely analyzes data. The final decision still rests with human commanders and political leaders. But reality suggests that when algorithms operate at extraordinary speed, human judgment can begin to follow the rhythm of machines.

Here arises the deeper question of ethics and humanity. If wars of the future are increasingly guided by data, algorithms, and automated systems, will the world become safer—or more dangerous? Will a computer program one day determine which city should be struck by a missile and which life should end?

History teaches us that every new weapon of war initially strengthens the powerful and weakens the vulnerable. Artificial intelligence may follow the same path. Unless the world establishes moral and legal boundaries for its use, the battlefield of the future may belong less to human beings and more to algorithms and autonomous systems.

Humanity created technology to serve mankind. The question before us now is whether, in the wars of tomorrow, man himself may become subordinate to the very algorithms he created.

The world must confront this question today—because if the answer is postponed until tomorrow, tomorrow’s decision may no longer belong to man, but to the machine.
