The Indian Youth Congress (IYC), the youth wing of the Congress party, has suspended dozens of office-bearers across several states for failing to attend the INDIA bloc rally held at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi on November 1. More than 80 office-bearers have so far been suspended and issued notices seeking explanations. Party sources indicate that the number could rise to nearly 500.
Around 60 office-bearers from Madhya Pradesh, at least 13 from Congress-governed Himachal Pradesh and approximately 10 from Haryana have faced suspension. Disciplinary proceedings are underway in other states as well.
The IYC had directed all its national, state and district-level office-bearers to attend the rally and the march preceding it.
To monitor attendance, barcode scanners were installed at the assembly point on Minto Road. Office-bearers and accompanying workers were instructed to register through the organisation’s official application, With IYC.
According to the Youth Congress, approximately 15,000 workers gathered at Minto Road to participate in Rahul Gandhi’s march to Ramlila Maidan. However, only 2,831 people registered through the application.
An internal review reportedly found that many office-bearers and workers failed to check in because of limited technical awareness, lack of interest and slow internet connectivity along the route.
Following the rally, the organisation initiated disciplinary action against office-bearers who were absent without providing valid reasons.
IYC president Uday Bhanu Chib described the rally as a success in an interview with NDTV, claiming that more than 15,000 Youth Congress workers had participated.
He said that despite clear instructions, some office-bearers had failed to maintain organisational discipline. The leadership, he added, was removing inactive and irresponsible individuals to make way for committed workers.
The Congress leadership has also begun reviewing the attendance of office-bearers and workers from the parent organisation. Particular attention is being paid to district presidents appointed under the Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan, an organisational rejuvenation initiative.
Before the rally, Congress general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal had claimed that 10 lakh people would attend. However, party sources acknowledged that the turnout was reportedly less than 10 per cent of the projected figure. An internal assessment is underway.
The rally was organised to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and protest alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
Rahul Gandhi alleged that electoral manipulation was taking place through electronic voting machines and the deletion or addition of names in voter lists. He predicted that Gyanesh Kumar would be removed from office and face legal action.
Several INDIA bloc leaders addressed the gathering, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah.
Mamata Banerjee criticised the SIR exercise in West Bengal, alleging that people in the state were being victimised. She asserted that her party would continue its struggle and would not surrender.
The BJP challenged the Congress’s claims regarding the rally’s attendance. BJP MP Sambit Patra alleged that approximately 40 per cent of Ramlila Maidan remained vacant and that thousands of chairs were unoccupied.
The conflicting claims over attendance, electoral irregularities and the political significance of the rally have intensified the confrontation between the ruling BJP and opposition INDIA bloc.
