Students reject administration’s three-point proposal over restoration of the students’ union; Section 163 imposed outside campus, over 30 students reportedly detained
New Delhi, October 27, 2026
Tensions escalated at Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi as students renewed their protest demanding the restoration of the students’ union, rejecting a proposal issued by the university administration to end the agitation.
Despite an appeal by the administration and students signing an agreement document, the standoff remained unresolved. Following a fresh protest call, police imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) outside the university campus to prohibit unlawful gatherings and assemblies.
A heavy deployment of central police forces was reported outside the university gates, with barricades erected and several gates sealed.
Several student organisations, including the All India Students’ Association (AISA), had called for a fresh demonstration at the university gates at 3 pm on Tuesday. The renewed protest heightened tensions around the campus, where notices announcing the enforcement of Section 163 were displayed.
The latest confrontation followed an order issued by the university administration on October 26, outlining three measures intended to address the students’ demands.
Under the proposal, elections to the students’ union would be held 15 days after approval of its constitution. The administration also proposed withdrawing suspension orders and show-cause notices issued to students, along with forming a committee to investigate the conduct of security personnel during the protests.
However, students on hunger strike rejected all three measures, arguing that the document did not provide a firm commitment on their principal demands.
The restoration of the students’ union remains the central point of contention. Protesters have insisted that their agitation will continue until the administration provides concrete assurances and addresses their concerns.
Women students played a prominent role in the renewed agitation. According to the report, some climbed iron gates approximately 10 to 12 feet high while resisting attempts by police personnel to bring them down.
Students banged on gates, raised slogans, marched in groups and attempted to force open several entrances.
During the confrontation, the Ibn-e-Sina gate broke, while protesters pulled out a grill at Gate No. 7. Security personnel recorded the demonstrators as drones hovered above the campus entrances.
The administration had also welded one of the gates shut following reports that students had entered the campus through different entrances over the weekend.
More than 30 students were reportedly detained, although further details about their status were not provided in the report.
Amid the continuing unrest, the university administration decided on Monday to conduct the second mid-term semester examinations online. Online classes have also been extended until November 8.
The administration has not publicly responded to the students’ renewed rejection of its October 26 order, according to India Today.
With the students’ union restoration demand unresolved, the standoff continues, while restrictions and heightened security remain in place outside the campus.
