New York:
The X account of the organisers of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat’s upcoming New York event was briefly suspended on Thursday before being restored, adding another twist to an increasingly contentious controversy surrounding the August 29 gathering.
The event, titled the “Universal Oneness Celebration,” is scheduled to take place at Madison Square Garden, where Mohan Bhagwat is expected to headline the programme. It is being organised by American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD).
After the account was restored, the organisers thanked X and claimed that opponents had attempted to manipulate the platform’s algorithm and get their account blocked through coordinated reporting. The group maintained that its communications promote universal peace, harmony, oneness and interfaith and intercultural dialogue.
The development comes amid growing controversy over Bhagwat’s visit. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said a day earlier that he did not support the RSS or the planned event, while also acknowledging that the city may not have the legal authority to cancel a private gathering.
Mamdani has criticised the RSS ideology as representing what he described as an “exclusionary vision” of a country. His remarks have triggered reactions across political circles in both India and the United States.
Meanwhile, a US federal advisory body on religious freedom has urged the Trump administration to revoke Bhagwat’s visa, citing allegations concerning violence against religious minorities by groups associated with the RSS. India has rejected the allegations, calling the organisation biased and lacking credibility.
The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) has also issued a security advisory ahead of the event, urging the community to remain vigilant, stay aware of its surroundings and keep interactions civil. The organisation has called upon Mayor Mamdani to ensure the safety and civil rights of everyone attending the event.
What was expected to be a major diaspora gathering has therefore evolved into a much broader political and ideological controversy—bringing questions of free expression, religious identity, political ideology and pluralism into the spotlight.
The spotlight now turns to Madison Square Garden, where the August 29 event could become a significant flashpoint in the continuing debate over the place of Hindutva politics in the Indian-American community and beyond.
