ہمالیہ کی بلند و بالا چوٹیوں کے سائے میں آباد وادیوں میں اچانک ایسا قیامت خیز منظر برپا ہوا کہ پانی، مٹی اور پتھروں کے ایک بے رحم ریلے نے زندگی کی بستیوں کو لمحوں میں ملبے کا ڈھیر بنا دیا۔ نیپال اور تبت کی سرحدی وادیوں میں آنے والے تباہ کن سیلاب نے کم از کم 95 افراد کی جان لے لی ہے، جبکہ سیکڑوں افراد تاحال لاپتہ ہیں۔

یہ محض ایک سیلاب نہیں تھا؛ یہ پہاڑوں سے اترتی ہوئی ایک ایسی خوفناک یلغار تھی جس کے سامنے انسان کی بنائی ہوئی سڑکیں، پل، گھر اور بجلی گھر سب بے بس نظر آئے۔ دریاؤں نے اپنے کنارے توڑے اور اپنے ساتھ گھر، گاڑیاں، پل اور انسانی خواب تک بہا لے گئے۔

حکام کے مطابق 384 سیاحوں سمیت سیکڑوں افراد لاپتہ ہیں۔ ان میں 291 ایسے سیاح بھی شامل ہیں جن کا تعلق بھارت، امریکہ، برطانیہ، ملائیشیا اور دوسرے ممالک سے بتایا جاتا ہے۔ نیپال کے 44 فوجی اہلکار اور 30 پولیس اہلکار بھی لاپتہ افراد میں شامل ہیں۔

نیپال کے سیاحتی حکام کا کہنا ہے کہ لاپتہ ہونے والے بیشتر افراد ممکنہ طور پر بھارت اور بھارتی نژاد افراد ہیں، جو تبت میں واقع ہندوؤں کے مقدس مقام کَیلَاش مانسروور کی یاترا پر نکلے تھے۔ یوں یہ قدرتی آفت محض ایک ملک کا المیہ نہیں رہی بلکہ کئی خاندانوں کے لیے انتظار، بے یقینی اور اندیشے کی ایک طویل رات بن گئی ہے۔

ابتدائی اطلاعات کے مطابق ایک زلزلے کے نتیجے میں برف اور چٹانوں کا ایک بڑا تودہ گرا، جس نے دریائے لَہَندے کھولا میں اچانک پانی اور ملبے کا ایک خوفناک ریلا پیدا کردیا۔ یہ دریا آگے چل کر بھوٹے کوشی سے ملتا ہے۔ خدشہ ہے کہ بالائی علاقے میں دریا کے راستے میں رکاوٹ بدستور موجود ہے اور اس کے نتیجے میں صورتِ حال مزید سنگین ہوسکتی ہے۔

نیپال کے حکام نے بھوٹے کوشی، تریشولی اور ناراینی دریاؤں کے کناروں پر آباد لوگوں کو خبردار کرتے ہوئے محفوظ اور بلند مقامات کی طرف منتقل ہونے کی ہدایت کی ہے۔ بھارت کی ریاستوں بہار اور اتر پردیش میں بھی سیلابی خطرے کے پیش نظر الرٹ جاری کردیا گیا ہے، کیونکہ متاثرہ دریاؤں کا پانی آگے چل کر ان علاقوں تک پہنچ سکتا ہے۔

راسووا کے پہاڑی ضلعے میں سیافرو بیسی اور ٹموری جیسے علاقے شدید متاثر ہوئے ہیں۔ تباہ شدہ راستوں اور تیز دھار پانی کے باعث امدادی ہیلی کاپٹروں کو بھی کئی مقامات پر اترنے میں دشواری پیش آرہی ہے۔ بعض بستیاں ایسی ہیں جہاں تباہی کے سوا کچھ دکھائی نہیں دیتا۔

ایک مقامی صحت کارکن تولا بہادر بی کے کے الفاظ میں، "دریا کے کنارے آباد بستیاں مکمل طور پر بہہ گئی ہیں” اور ان کے اپنے پانچ رشتہ دار لاپتہ ہیں۔

یہ سانحہ اس حقیقت کی ایک اور ہولناک یاد دہانی ہے کہ ہمالیہ محض برف پوش پہاڑوں کا حسین سلسلہ نہیں؛ یہ ایک حساس ماحولیاتی خطہ بھی ہے، جہاں موسمیاتی تبدیلی، پگھلتی برف، برفانی جھیلوں اور اچانک آنے والے سیلابوں کا خطرہ مسلسل بڑھ رہا ہے۔

گزشتہ برس بھی بھوٹے کوشی میں آنے والے سیلاب نے نو افراد کی جان لے لی تھی اور نیپال و چین کو ملانے والا ایک اہم پل بہا لے گیا تھا، جس سے کئی ماہ تک تجارت اور آمدورفت متاثر رہی۔

اب ایک بار پھر ہمالیہ نے اپنے دامن میں بسنے والوں کو خبردار کیا ہے۔

َقدرت جب اپنا توازن کھوتی ہے تو انسان کی بنائی ہوئی سرحدیں، سڑکیں اور دیواریں سب بے معنی ہوجاتی ہیں۔ پہاڑ خاموش ضرور ہوتے ہیں، مگر ان کا غصہ کبھی خاموش نہیں رہتا۔

A terrifying disaster has struck the Himalayan borderlands of Nepal and Tibet, where a sudden torrent of water, mud and debris has transformed peaceful valleys into scenes of devastation.

At least 95 people have been killed and hundreds remain missing after catastrophic flash floods swept through areas along the Nepal-Tibet border.

This was not merely a flood. It was a violent surge from the mountains — powerful enough to tear through homes, roads, bridges and hydroelectric plants, leaving entire settlements buried beneath mud and debris.

Authorities say 384 tourists are among those reported missing, including 291 foreign visitors from countries such as India, the United States, Britain and Malaysia. Nepal has also reported 44 army personnel and 30 police officers missing.

Officials from Nepal’s tourism sector fear that many of the missing may be Indian nationals and members of the Indian diaspora travelling on pilgrimage to Mount Kailash, one of the most sacred sites in Hinduism.

For their families, the Himalayan disaster has now become a painful wait between hope and despair.

Initial reports suggest that an earthquake triggered an avalanche of ice and rock, sending a sudden and devastating surge down the Lhende Khola river, a tributary of the Bhote Koshi. Authorities fear that the river remains blocked upstream and that further flooding could follow.

Warnings have been issued to people living along the Bhote Koshi, Trishuli and Narayani rivers, urging them to move to higher ground and remain vigilant.

The danger is not confined to Nepal. Flood alerts have also been issued in the Indian states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, downstream from the affected river systems.

In the mountainous Rasuwa district, rescue operations have been severely hampered. Helicopters have struggled to reach places such as Syapru Besi and Timure because of swollen rivers and damaged access routes.

The scale of the destruction is immense. Homes have collapsed into floodwaters, vehicles have been swept away and bridges have disappeared beneath torrents of mud and water.

“There is devastation everywhere we look,” said local health worker Tula Bahadur BK, who said five of his own relatives were among those missing.

The tragedy is yet another warning about the growing vulnerability of the Himalayan region — a fragile ecosystem increasingly exposed to earthquakes, unstable glaciers, glacial lakes and extreme weather.

Last year, flooding along the Bhote Koshi killed nine people and destroyed a key bridge linking Nepal and China, disrupting trade and transportation for months.

Now the mountains have spoken again.

Nature recognises no borders. And when the Himalayas lose their balance, neither roads nor bridges nor human-made boundaries can stand between civilisation and catastrophe.
