Indian politics is seeing sharper, more satirical exchanges where debate and ridicule often overlap. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today attacked PM Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, questioning foreign policy, Parliament functioning, and student issues.

A key moment was his sarcasm about Modi’s widely publicised hugs with world leaders, suggesting diplomacy has been reduced to photo opportunities.

The remark was meant to provoke, but it raises a serious question:

Is foreign policy about optics and personal chemistry, or about national interest, strategy, security, and long-term outcomes?

Personal rapport has always been part of diplomacy, and India has used it to strengthen global ties. But photographs alone do not define success.

The real test comes after the cameras are off.

What has India achieved in terms of strategic security, relations with major powers, trade, energy, defence, and citizen welfare? These are the real benchmarks.

Rahul Gandhi’s criticism should not be dismissed as mere satire. The Opposition must question the government, but also offer credible alternatives if it finds policy lacking.

He also targeted Amit Shah’s absence from Parliament, arguing that sustained Opposition pressure is necessary. This reflects a core democratic principle:

A strong government does not need a weak Opposition.

Parliament belongs to the people, and democracy suffers when debate is replaced by disruption or confrontation replaces dialogue.

He also raised issues of student protests, exam leaks, and policing, urging focus on systemic problems rather than personal attacks.

Ultimately, India’s real challenges are employment, education, security, and economic growth—not political one-liners.

A leader’s embrace of a foreign counterpart is not foreign policy, just as mocking it is not an alternative.

Foreign policy is defined after the photographs end—by outcomes, strategy, and national interest.

And democracy works best when government is accountable, Opposition is responsible, and both remember they serve the people, not just politics.

AI Generated
