Growing tensions in West Asia have continued to fuel uncertainty in global financial and commodity markets. A US official quoted by Reuters said Washington expects Iran and Oman to reach an agreement soon to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and restore commercial maritime traffic.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan have signed a mutual defence treaty in Mecca, under which an armed attack on any one of the three countries would be treated as an attack on all three.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said that Tehran is not seeking war or territorial expansion, but would not submit to pressure or intimidation.
The regional instability has also affected global energy markets. On July 23, international crude oil prices surged sharply, with Brent crude crossing the $100-per-barrel mark for the first time since May. Prices rose by more than 6 per cent in a single trading session.
Tensions had briefly eased following a surprise 60-day agreement between the United States and Iran in mid-June 2026, aimed at pausing armed clashes and protecting critical maritime routes. However, continuing attacks and risks to commercial shipping quickly undermined the fragile arrangement, with both sides resuming military manoeuvres.
Against this backdrop, investors have increasingly turned to gold as a traditional safe-haven asset. Domestic gold prices in India continue to fluctuate in response to global spot prices, import duties, currency movements and changing geopolitical conditions.
