A meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence witnessed a fresh political debate after Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi alleged that the influence of the RSS in India’s Sainik Schools is increasing. The committee’s chairman, Radha Mohan Singh, responded by asking him to provide documentary evidence so that the matter could be referred to the concerned ministry. This reflects the proper democratic approach: serious allegations should be backed by evidence, and the government should respond transparently.
Beyond the political exchange lies a more important question: What should be the character of military schools?
Sainik Schools were established to prepare disciplined, responsible, and capable young citizens for careers in the armed forces and public service. Their primary mission is to cultivate leadership, constitutional values, patriotism, integrity, and professional excellence—not to advance the ideology of any political party or social organisation.
As a matter of principle, military schools should remain under the authority of the state, operating with professional oversight and constitutional accountability. Their curriculum and administration should reflect national interests rather than partisan or ideological priorities. The armed forces belong to the nation as a whole, and institutions that prepare future officers must enjoy the confidence of citizens across political and social divides.
Internationally, the dominant model is clear. In countries such as the United States, France, China, Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, military schools are generally run by governments, ministries of defence, or state-authorised public institutions. Some countries do have private military-style academies or boarding schools, but these typically complement rather than replace official state-run military education and are not the principal pathway for training future military officers.
For India, the central issue should not be political rhetoric but institutional credibility. If concerns about ideological influence exist, they deserve an impartial and evidence-based inquiry. If the allegations are unfounded, they should be conclusively disproved. Either outcome would strengthen public trust. National military institutions must remain professional, transparent, and firmly rooted in the constitutional values they are meant to defend.
