مدراس ہائی کورٹ کی جانب سے دریائے تمیرابرنی کو مذہبی رسومات کے نام پر ہونے والی آلودگی سے محفوظ رکھنے کے لیے دی گئی ہدایات نہ صرف ایک اہم قانونی پیش رفت ہیں بلکہ یہ پورے ملک کے لیے ایک بیدار کن پیغام بھی ہیں۔ عدالت نے بجا طور پر واضح کیا ہے کہ کسی بھی شہری کو مذہبی آزادی کی آڑ میں دریاؤں، جھیلوں یا دیگر آبی ذخائر کو آلودہ کرنے کا حق حاصل نہیں۔ آئین مذہبی آزادی کی ضمانت ضرور دیتا ہے، مگر یہ آزادی عوامی صحت، ماحولیات اور دوسروں کے حقوق سے بالاتر نہیں ہو سکتی۔

ہمارے ملک میں مختلف مذاہب اور برادریوں کے ماننے والے اپنے اپنے عقائد کے مطابق متعدد مذہبی رسومات انجام دیتے ہیں۔ لیکن جب ان رسومات کے نتیجے میں دریاؤں اور جھیلوں میں کپڑے، پلاسٹک، مورتیاں، تعزیے، راکھ، استھیاں، پھول، فریم، کیمیائی رنگ یا دیگر اشیاء بڑی مقدار میں ڈالی جاتی ہیں تو اس سے پانی آلودہ ہوتا ہے، آبی حیات متاثر ہوتی ہے اور انسانی صحت کے لیے بھی سنگین خطرات پیدا ہوتے ہیں۔

یہ وقت ہے کہ حکومتیں، مذہبی قائدین، سماجی تنظیمیں اور عوام مل کر ایسے متبادل طریقے اختیار کریں جن سے مذہبی جذبات بھی مجروح نہ ہوں اور ماحولیات بھی محفوظ رہیں۔ مثال کے طور پر گنیش مورتیوں یا محرم کے تعزیوں کے لیے مصنوعی تالاب یا مخصوص حوض قائم کیے جا سکتے ہیں، جہاں ماحول دوست طریقے سے وسرجن انجام دیا جائے۔ اسی طرح استھیوں یا دیگر مذہبی اشیاء کے لیے بھی ایسے انتظامات کیے جا سکتے ہیں جن سے دریاؤں اور ندیوں کو آلودگی سے بچایا جا سکے۔

یہ معاملہ کسی ایک مذہب یا ایک رسم کا نہیں بلکہ ایک قومی ذمہ داری کا ہے۔ قانون سب کے لیے یکساں ہونا چاہیے اور ماحولیات کے تحفظ کے اصول بھی بلاامتیاز نافذ ہونے چاہییں۔ اگر کسی مذہبی عمل سے فطرت، پانی، جنگلی حیات یا عوامی صحت کو نقصان پہنچتا ہے تو اس کے لیے ماحول دوست اور باوقار متبادل تلاش کرنا ہی دانشمندی ہے۔

قدرت کی حفاظت دراصل آنے والی نسلوں کے حق کی حفاظت ہے۔ مذہب انسان کو صفائی، اعتدال اور مخلوقِ خدا کی بھلائی کا درس دیتا ہے۔ اس لیے حقیقی مذہبی شعور یہی ہے کہ عبادت اور عقیدت کے ساتھ ساتھ زمین، پانی اور ماحول کے تقدس کا بھی اسی طرح احترام کیا جائے۔ جب عقیدہ اور ذمہ داری ایک دوسرے کا ہاتھ تھام لیں گے تو نہ صرف ہماری مذہبی روایات محفوظ رہیں گی بلکہ ہماری ندیاں، دریا اور آنے والی نسلیں بھی ایک بہتر اور پاکیزہ ماحول سے فیض یاب ہوں گی۔

Faith and the Environment: Protecting Nature Is Also a Sacred Duty

The Madras High Court’s recent intervention to protect the Tamirabarani River from pollution caused by ritual practices is a timely reminder that environmental protection is a constitutional and moral obligation. The Court rightly observed that no one has the right to pollute rivers or other water bodies in the name of religion. While the Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, that freedom is subject to public health, environmental protection, and the rights of others.

India is home to diverse religious traditions, each with its own rituals and customs. However, when clothes, plastic, idols, tazias, ashes, flowers, photo frames, or other ritual objects are immersed in rivers and lakes, the result is often severe pollution, harm to aquatic life, and long-term risks to public health.

The need of the hour is not to undermine religious beliefs but to encourage environmentally responsible alternatives. Governments, religious leaders, community organisations, and citizens should work together to establish designated artificial ponds or immersion tanks for Ganesh idols, Muharram tazias, and other ceremonial objects. Likewise, respectful and eco-friendly alternatives should be developed for the immersion of ashes and other ritual materials so that sacred rivers remain clean and healthy.

This is not an issue concerning any one religion or community. It is a question of applying the same environmental standards to everyone without discrimination. The law should be impartial, and environmental responsibility must be shared equally by all. Whenever a religious practice causes measurable harm to rivers, biodiversity, or public health, sustainable alternatives should be encouraged through dialogue, awareness, and public participation.

Protecting nature is an act of responsibility toward future generations. Every great faith teaches cleanliness, compassion, and respect for creation. True spirituality is not diminished by protecting rivers; rather, it is strengthened when devotion is expressed in ways that preserve the environment instead of degrading it. Faith and ecological responsibility can—and should—go hand in hand for the common good of society.
