دوسرا سوال یہ ہے کہ آگ لگنے کی اصل وجہ کیا تھی؟ کیا یہ محض ایک اتفاقی حادثہ تھا، بجلی کے نظام میں خرابی تھی، یا کسی انسانی کوتاہی کا نتیجہ؟ جب تک آزاد اور شفاف تحقیقات مکمل نہیں ہوتیں، ہر امکان محض ایک قیاس آرائی رہے گا۔

تیسرا اور شاید سب سے اہم سوال عوامی اعتماد سے متعلق ہے۔ جمہوریت صرف ووٹ ڈالنے کے عمل کا نام نہیں بلکہ اس اعتماد کا نام ہے کہ ہر ووٹ محفوظ، قابلِ تصدیق اور شفاف طریقے سے محفوظ کیا گیا ہے۔ جب ہزاروں ای وی ایمز ایک ساتھ تباہ ہونے کی خبر سامنے آتی ہے تو فطری طور پر عوام کے ذہن میں سوال پیدا ہوتا ہے کہ کیا ان مشینوں سے متعلق تمام معلومات پہلے ہی محفوظ کر لی گئی تھیں؟

تحقیقی ماہرین کا کہنا ہے کہ اگر انتخابی نتائج پہلے ہی باضابطہ طور پر محفوظ، تصدیق شدہ اور عدالتی مدتِ اعتراض مکمل کر چکے ہوں تو ای وی ایمز کی تباہی انتخابی نتائج کو لازماً متاثر نہیں کرتی۔ تاہم اگر کسی حلقے میں تنازع، عدالتی درخواست یا دوبارہ جانچ کی ضرورت پیدا ہو تو ایسی مشینوں کی عدم دستیابی نئے سوالات کو جنم دے سکتی ہے۔

اس واقعے میں اصل خبر صرف آگ نہیں، بلکہ اعتماد کا مسئلہ ہے۔ جمہوریت میں شفافیت صرف منصفانہ انتخابات سے نہیں آتی بلکہ اس یقین سے پیدا ہوتی ہے کہ اگر کل کوئی سوال اٹھے تو اس کا جواب دینے کے لیے تمام شواہد محفوظ موجود ہوں گے۔

A government official has stated that nearly 4,000 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were destroyed in a fire. According to the statement, these machines had been used in ten constituencies during the state’s recent Assembly elections.

At first glance, the incident may appear to be an unfortunate administrative accident. Yet beneath the ashes lie a number of important questions that deserve public attention.

The first question concerns the storage and security of these machines. Where exactly were the EVMs kept after the elections? What safety protocols were in place? Were their electronic records, logs, and related documentation preserved separately before the fire occurred?

A second question relates to the cause of the blaze itself. Was it merely an accidental fire, an electrical malfunction, or the result of human negligence? Until an independent and transparent investigation is completed, any definitive conclusion would remain speculation rather than fact.

Perhaps the most significant issue, however, is not the fire itself but public trust.

Democracy depends not only on the casting of votes but also on citizens’ confidence that every vote remains secure, verifiable, and accountable. When thousands of voting machines are reported destroyed in a single incident, it is natural for questions to arise about whether all relevant records had already been safeguarded and whether adequate mechanisms exist for future verification.

At present, there is no evidence that these 4,000 EVMs concealed any secret or that their destruction was linked to electoral wrongdoing. Such claims would require proof, not suspicion. The fire may have reduced the machines to ashes, but it has also reignited a larger debate: How can democratic systems ensure transparency, accountability, and public confidence when critical electoral equipment is suddenly lost?
