The passing of Katib Naseer Ahmad has cast a shadow of sorrow across literary and cultural circles. A devoted patron of Urdu language and literature, he was widely respected for his contribution to literary gatherings and for his efforts in promoting Urdu culture beyond national boundaries.
He was the son of the esteemed scholar Maulvi Katib Muhammad Yusuf, and the younger brother of the late poet and journalist Katib Malik-ul-Aziz and noted fiction writer Shabib Ahmad Kaaf. He belonged to a distinguished family whose services to religion, literature, journalism, and education have left a lasting legacy.
For Syed Akbar Zahid, Editor of Alif News, this loss is deeply personal. Conversations with Katib Naseer Ahmad had continued until about six months ago, after which communication unexpectedly ceased. Subsequent inquiries revealed that he had been unwell. The news of his demise has therefore arrived with profound sadness and a sense of personal bereavement.
Though professionally an engineer, Katib Naseer Ahmad carried within him a lifelong passion for Urdu language and literature. He played a significant role in organizing major Urdu mushairas and literary events in Dubai and several other countries, helping to keep the cultural spirit of Urdu alive among expatriate communities.
His literary inclination was a continuation of a rich family tradition. His father, Maulvi Katib Muhammad Yusuf, was among the city’s respected religious scholars and a renowned Friday preacher. His sermons were known not only for their spiritual depth but also for their thoughtful engagement with contemporary social realities and modern challenges. The same intellectual curiosity, cultural awareness, and commitment to public service became visible in the lives of his sons.
With the passing of Katib Naseer Ahmad, the Urdu world loses not merely an individual but a gracious bridge between tradition and modernity, faith and culture, community and literature.
“Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return.”
May Almighty Allah forgive him, shower His mercy upon him, grant him the highest place in Jannat-ul-Firdous, and bless his family, friends, and admirers with patience and strength during this difficult time.
Funeral prayers will be offered after Asr at Masjid Thana Street, Purasawalkam, Chennai, Insha’Allah. His mortal remains have been placed at his residence in Premier Apartments, Jamalia, Perambur, Chennai.
