جنوبی لبنان کے پہاڑی سلسلوں پر واقع بیوفورٹ قلعہ ایک تاریخی عمارت ہی نہیں بلکہ مشرقِ وسطیٰ کی سیاسی اور عسکری تاریخ کا ایک زندہ استعارہ بھی ہے۔ صلیبی دور میں تعمیر ہونے والا یہ قلعہ صدیوں سے مختلف سلطنتوں، افواج اور مزاحمتی تحریکوں کے درمیان کشمکش کا مرکز رہا ہے۔ اسی لیے جب اسرائیلی افواج نے حالیہ کارروائی میں اس قلعے پر قبضہ کیا تو اس کے اثرات صرف میدانِ جنگ تک محدود نہ رہے بلکہ بین الاقوامی سفارت کاری کے ایوانوں تک جا پہنچے۔

فرانس کی جانب سے اقوام متحدہ کی سلامتی کونسل کا ہنگامی اجلاس طلب کرنے کا مطالبہ اسی تشویش کی عکاسی کرتا ہے۔ فرانسیسی وزیرِ خارجہ ژاں نویل بارو کا مؤقف ہے کہ اگرچہ ہر ملک کو اپنے دفاع کا حق حاصل ہے، لیکن لبنان کی سرزمین میں مسلسل فوجی پیش قدمی اور مزید علاقوں پر قبضہ خطے کے استحکام کے لیے خطرناک ثابت ہو سکتا ہے۔ فرانس کی یہ حساسیت محض موجودہ واقعے تک محدود نہیں بلکہ لبنان کے ساتھ اس کے تاریخی تعلقات، وہاں کے سیاسی نظام میں اس کی دیرینہ دلچسپی اور خطے میں امن و استحکام کے لیے اس کی سفارتی کوششوں سے بھی جڑی ہوئی ہے۔

دوسری جانب اسرائیل کا استدلال یہ ہے کہ اصل مسئلہ اقوام متحدہ کی قرارداد 1701 پر عمل درآمد میں ناکامی ہے۔ اسرائیلی حکام کا کہنا ہے کہ حزب اللہ نے برسوں سے اس قرارداد کی خلاف ورزی کرتے ہوئے اپنی عسکری طاقت میں اضافہ کیا اور سرحدی علاقوں میں اپنی موجودگی برقرار رکھی، جس سے اسرائیلی شہریوں کی سلامتی کو مسلسل خطرات لاحق رہے۔

بیوفورٹ قلعہ کی اہمیت صرف اس کی تاریخی حیثیت میں نہیں بلکہ اس کے جغرافیائی محلِ وقوع میں بھی پوشیدہ ہے۔ یہ قلعہ اردگرد کے وسیع علاقوں پر نظر رکھنے کی صلاحیت رکھتا ہے اور عسکری اعتبار سے ایک بلند و بالا نگرانی گاہ کی حیثیت رکھتا ہے۔ یہی وجہ ہے کہ ماضی میں بھی مختلف جنگوں کے دوران اس پر قبضہ ایک اہم عسکری کامیابی سمجھا جاتا رہا ہے۔

آج کا سوال صرف ایک قلعے کے قبضے کا نہیں بلکہ اس وسیع تر بحران کا ہے جو لبنان، اسرائیل اور پورے خطے کے مستقبل کو متاثر کر سکتا ہے۔ فرانس کی آواز دراصل اس خوف کی ترجمان ہے کہ اگر سفارت کاری خاموش ہو گئی تو توپوں کی گرج پورے مشرقِ وسطیٰ کو ایک نئے اور زیادہ خطرناک تصادم کی طرف دھکیل سکتی ہے۔

تاریخ گواہ ہے کہ قلعے فتح کیے جا سکتے ہیں، مگر پائیدار امن صرف مذاکرات، اعتماد اور بین الاقوامی ذمہ داری کے ذریعے ہی حاصل کیا جا سکتا ہے۔

Beaufort Castle: An Ancient Stronghold and a New Diplomatic Flashpoint

Perched high above southern Lebanon, Beaufort Castle is far more than a medieval fortress. It is a symbol of centuries of conflict, conquest, and strategic rivalry in the Middle East. Built during the Crusader era, the castle has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, armies, and resistance movements. Its recent capture by Israeli forces has therefore resonated well beyond the battlefield, drawing international diplomatic attention.

France’s call for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council reflects growing concern over the expanding military confrontation in Lebanon. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot argued that while every nation possesses the right to self-defense, continued military operations and deeper territorial penetration into Lebanon risk further destabilizing an already fragile region. France’s reaction is also rooted in its long historical relationship with Lebanon and its traditional role as a diplomatic stakeholder in Lebanese affairs.

Israel, however, maintains that the central issue remains the failure to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war. Israeli officials argue that Hezbollah has repeatedly violated the resolution by maintaining military capabilities and positions in southern Lebanon, thereby posing an ongoing threat to Israeli civilians and regional security.

The significance of Beaufort Castle lies not only in its history but also in its geography. Situated on a commanding elevation, the fortress overlooks vast stretches of southern Lebanon and surrounding approaches. For decades, military strategists have regarded it as a valuable observation and defensive position. Control of the castle therefore carries both symbolic and tactical importance.

The broader question raised by this episode extends far beyond a single fortress. It concerns the future of stability in Lebanon, the security concerns of Israel, and the possibility of a wider regional escalation. France’s intervention reflects fears that if diplomacy fails to keep pace with military developments, the region could slide into a deeper and more dangerous conflict.

History teaches that castles can be captured, territories can change hands, and armies can claim victories. Yet lasting peace is rarely achieved through military gains alone. It is built through dialogue, restraint, and a shared commitment to regional stability and international law.
