عید کی نماز، خوف کی فضا اور ہندوستانی جمہوریت کا سوال
ہندوستان کی گلیوں میں عید کی آمد ہمیشہ خوشبو، روشنی، بچوں کی ہنسی اور اجتماعی دعا کی علامت رہی ہے۔ مگر اس برس کئی شہروں میں عید کی صبح خوشی سے زیادہ اضطراب لے کر آئی ہے۔ مساجد کے دروازوں پر اب صرف عبادت کی صفیں نہیں بنتیں، بلکہ اندیشوں کے سائے بھی کھڑے دکھائی دیتے ہیں۔
اترپردیش، دہلی اور دیگر ریاستوں میں مسلمانوں کو عید کی نماز کے لیے “ میں آنے کی ہدایات، سڑکوں پر نماز سے متعلق سخت وارننگز، اور پولیس نگرانی نے ایک ایسا سوال پیدا کردیا ہے جو صرف مذہبی آزادی کا نہیں بلکہ ہندوستانی جمہوریت کی روح کا سوال ہے۔
یہ درست ہے کہ عوامی نظم و نسق ہر حکومت کی ذمہ داری ہے۔ سڑکیں بند نہ ہوں، شہری زندگی متاثر نہ ہو، اور قانون سب کے لیے یکساں ہو — یہ ایک مہذب معاشرے کی ضرورت ہے۔ مگر جب یہی اصول صرف ایک مخصوص طبقے کے گرد سخت حصار بن جائیں اور دوسری مذہبی سرگرمیوں کو سرکاری سہولتیں اور تحفظ حاصل رہے، تو انصاف کا توازن مشکوک ہونے لگتا ہے۔
عید کی نماز چند منٹوں کی عبادت ہے، طاقت کا مظاہرہ نہیں۔ مگر جب عبادت کو بھی شک کی نگاہ سے دیکھا جانے لگے، تو مسئلہ صرف سڑک یا ٹریفک کا نہیں رہتا، بلکہ دلوں کے درمیان بڑھتی ہوئی دوریوں کا بن جاتا ہے۔
ہندوستان کی تہذیب کی اصل طاقت اس کی گوناگونی رہی ہے۔ یہی سرزمین مندروں کی گھنٹیوں، مسجدوں کی اذانوں، گرجا گھروں کی دعاؤں اور گوردواروں کی شبد گائیکی کو ایک ساتھ سننے کی عادی رہی ہے۔ اگر کسی ایک آواز کو خوف، نگرانی یا الزام کے حصار میں محدود کردیا جائے، تو نقصان صرف ایک کمیونٹی کا نہیں بلکہ پورے معاشرتی توازن کا ہوتا ہے۔
سب سے زیادہ افسوسناک پہلو یہ ہے کہ اب خوف صرف جسمانی نہیں رہا، بلکہ نفسیاتی ہوچکا ہے۔ لوگ نماز سے پہلے یہ سوچتے ہیں کہ کہیں ان کی ویڈیو نہ بن جائے، کہیں ان پر مقدمہ نہ قائم ہوجائے، کہیں ان کی عبادت کو اشتعال کا نام نہ دے دیا جائے۔ جب شہری اپنی مذہبی شناخت کے اظہار سے خوف محسوس کرنے لگیں، تو یہ جمہوری معاشروں کے لیے خطرے کی گھنٹی ہے۔
ایسے وقت میں حکومتوں، سماجی تنظیموں، مذہبی قیادتوں اور میڈیا سب کی ذمہ داری بڑھ جاتی ہے کہ وہ آگ بجھانے کا کردار ادا کریں، نہ کہ خوف اور نفرت کو مزید ہوا دیں۔ اختلافات کے باوجود ایک دوسرے کے حقِ عبادت اور انسانی وقار کا احترام ہی کسی بھی کثیرالثقافتی معاشرے کی اصل بنیاد ہوتا ہے۔
عید قربانی، ایثار اور انسانیت کا پیغام دیتی ہے۔ شاید آج ہندوستان کو سب سے زیادہ اسی قربانی کی ضرورت ہے — انا کی قربانی، نفرت کی قربانی، اور اس سیاست کی قربانی جو شہریوں کو ایک دوسرے سے خوفزدہ بنا دے۔

Eid Prayers, Public Fear, and the Question Facing Indian Democracy
For generations, Eid in India has symbolized warmth, togetherness, prayer, and celebration. The morning of Eid traditionally arrived with children in new clothes, crowded mosques, and communities gathering peacefully in shared public spaces. This year, however, in many parts of the country, the atmosphere appears marked less by festivity and more by apprehension.
In several states, particularly Uttar Pradesh, Muslims have been instructed to offer Eid prayers in “shifts,” avoid gathering outside mosques, and refrain from praying in open spaces. Police advisories, political rhetoric, and the fear of punitive action have transformed what was once a routine religious gathering into an issue surrounded by anxiety and scrutiny.
Every state has a legitimate responsibility to maintain public order and manage traffic during large gatherings. Laws should apply equally to everyone, and civic convenience matters in a densely populated country. Yet concerns arise when restrictions appear selective, disproportionately affecting one community while large gatherings of others continue with administrative support and public facilitation. Equality before the law must not merely exist in principle; it must also be visible in practice.
An Eid prayer lasting a few minutes is not an assertion of dominance. But when even prayer begins to be viewed through the lens of suspicion, the issue ceases to be about roads or security alone. It becomes a reflection of how public belonging is being negotiated in contemporary India.
India’s civilizational strength has always rested in its pluralism — in the coexistence of temples, mosques, churches, and gurdwaras within the same social landscape. When any one community begins to feel hesitant about expressing its religious identity publicly, the damage extends far beyond that community. It weakens the moral confidence of the republic itself.
Perhaps the most troubling development is the emergence of psychological fear. Many Muslims now worry not only about police action but also about being filmed, publicly targeted, or vilified online simply for participating in communal prayer. When citizens begin to fear visibility in matters of faith, democratic space itself begins to shrink.
At such moments, governments, religious leaders, civil society, and the media carry a greater responsibility: not to deepen suspicion, but to preserve social trust. Public discourse must move away from confrontation and toward coexistence, fairness, and constitutional dignity.
Eid al-Adha is ultimately a festival of sacrifice, humility, and compassion. In today’s climate, India may need another kind of sacrifice even more urgently — the sacrifice of hatred, political polarization, and the fear that turns neighbours into strangers.
