Mojtaba Khamenei has reportedly rejected a major American demand that Iran transfer its stockpile of enriched uranium outside the country, further complicating fragile ceasefire and peace negotiations involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
According to Reuters, Iran’s leadership has decided that its near-weapons-grade enriched uranium must remain inside Iranian territory. The decision comes amid rising regional tensions and ongoing diplomatic efforts following recent military confrontations in the Middle East.
US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have both insisted that any future peace agreement must include strict restrictions on Iran’s nuclear activities, including the removal or reduction of its enriched uranium reserves.
Iranian officials, however, argue that exporting the uranium would leave the country vulnerable to future attacks by the United States or Israel. Tehran maintains that its nuclear programme is intended for peaceful and medical purposes, while Western nations continue to express concerns over possible weapons development.
The report also indicates that despite a temporary ceasefire, mistrust remains high on all sides. Iranian officials fear that the current pause in fighting may only be temporary, while Washington has warned that military action could resume if negotiations fail.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) previously estimated that Iran possessed more than 440 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60%, though the current status of the stockpile remains uncertain after recent attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities.
